Arthropoda, Crustacea, Isopoda
Crustacea, Isopoda, Buddelundiellidae -
Buddelundiella zimmeri Verhoeff, 1930 - Troglophile terrestrial crustacean that live in some cavities of the southern Piemonte. On the contrary of the Isopoda belonging to the Trichoniscidae family, this little crustaceans preserve yet the defensive behaviour to form into a ball, like other definitely epigean terrestrial Isopoda (i.e. Porcellio genus). The Buddelundiellidae family groups saprophage crustaceans with varied food regime that have on the back a series of characteristic fairings that give them an aggressive appearance. The species in the photos live in the Bossea Cave and in little cavities where recently the author found it during his search. (Real size: 3÷3,5 mm).Other images:
