Arthropoda, Crustacea, Isopoda
Crustacea, Isopoda, Trichoniscidae,
Alpioniscus feneriensis (Parona, 1880) subsp. caprae - Terrestrial crustacean that prefers the humid zones of the caves and lives on vegetable debris. It's a "classical" species, described by the Parona at the end of the XIX° Century for the Fenera Mons massif (Borgosesia, VC), that lives in most of the cavities of the northern Piemonte and it seems to have an isolated population in the Cuneese too (Vignolo, Colle della Bicocca, southern Piemonte). The specimens in the photos have been photographed in the Pugnetto Cave. From 1993 to 1995 the author found this crustacean also in higher cavities (and therefore colder) of the lower Locana Valley ("La Custreta" Cave), of the lower Aosta Valley ("Boira dal Salè") and of the higher Sorba Valley (Cave of the marble mine of the Massucco). Real size: 7-8 mm.Other images:
