n Manitoba, James Bay and (formerly) n shore of L. Superior, and Atlantic coast to se Quebec (incl. Anticosti I.), Miquelon I. and n Newfoundland (Bell I.). 
Winters mainly on coasts s to n Baja Calif., Florida, Mediterranean, Black and Caspian seas, and se China, Taiwan and Japan.
