Dicrurus adsimilis  FORK-TAILED DRONGO.  All habitats except extremely arid regions and humid forest.  From Senegambia e through s Mali, s Niger, Cameroon, C. African Rep. and s Sudan to Ethiopia and Somalia, s (exc. in w,c heavy forest) to s S. Africa.  Some authors include modestus, aldabranus, fuscipennis, forficatus, waldenii and macrocercus as subspecies of D. adsimilis.  Dowsett and Dowsett-Lemaire (1993) include modestus in adsimilis.  They find the treatment of modestus as a separate species "... hypothetical, and in need of careful investigation".  The combined distributions of adsimilis and modestus include all subSaharan African countries and the Gulf of Guinea islands of Fernando Po (Bioko) and Principé.  Probable hybrids have been reported and some authors suggest that they behave as "ecological species" in some areas.
