Relationships between groups, esp. in the Andes, are complex and more than one species may be involved.  C. o. punctulatus of w Panama has been treated as a species, but it intergrades (Olson 1993. Auk 110:148-150); however, substantial genetic differences have been reported between some Mexican races.

Phaenicophilus palmarum  BLACK-CROWNED PALM-TANAGER.  Open woodland, forest edge, thickets, swamps.  Lowlands of Hispaniola, incl. Saona I.  Hybridizes with P. poliocephalus; conspecificity has been suggested, but gene flow seems to be low (MacDonald and Smith 1990. Auk 107:707-717).

Habia gutturalis  SOOTY ANT-TANAGER.  Dense humid forest, undergrowth, edge, second growth.  Lowlands to 1100 m of nw,c Colombia.  H. fuscicauda and H. atrimaxillaris have been considered allopatric races of H. gutteralis, but morphological and behavioral studies suggest they are species.
Habia atrimaxillaris  BLACK-CHEEKED ANT-TANAGER.  Humid forest and woodland undergrowth, second growth.  Known only from sw Costa Rica; does not overlap with H. fuscicauda.

Tres Marías Is., to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and nw Nicaragua; mts. of c Costa Rica and w Panama.  Has nested in s Arizona, sometimes paired with P. ludoviciana.
Piranga flava  HEPATIC TANAGER.  Pine savanna, pine and pine-oak forest, open humid woodland, scrub, towns, riparian woodlands, parks.

The subspecies groups differ in vocalizations, flight calls and contact notes, morphologically and in ecological preferences in the zones of contact; they may be separate species.
