Thamnophilus doliatus   BARRED ANTSHRIKE.  Thickets, savanna, riparian growth, scrub, mangroves, towns.  Lowlands to 2000 m from Mexico in e San Luis Potosí, s Tamaulipas, Veracruz, e Puebla and Oaxaca s along both slopes, incl. Yucatán Pen. and Cozumel I., to Panama, incl. Coiba and Pearl is., and from n,c,e Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, Tobago and Guianas s, e of Andes, through e Ecuador, e Peru, Bolivia and Brazil to Paraguay and n Argentina. 
The form cadwaladeri may be a separate species, as suggested by Ridgely and Tudor (Birds of S. Amer., 2:229).

Thamnophilus zarumae  CHAPMAN'S ANTSHRIKE.  Foothills of sw Ecuador and nw Peru.  Differs from doliatus in vocalizations, plumage and size.  Treated as a full species by Ridgely and Tudor (Birds of S. Amer., 2:229).  Includes T. z. palamblae.
Thamnophilus multistriatus   BAR-CRESTED ANTSHRIKE.  Forest undergrowth, edge.  Andes, 1500-2650 m, of Colombia and extreme nw Venezuela.
Thamnophilus palliatus   LINED ANTSHRIKE.  Forest, edge, thickets, woodland.
 T. p. tenuepunctatus  Lowlands to 1900 m, e of Andes, from e Colombia s through e Ecuador and n Peru.  The tenuepunctatus subspecies group closely approaches the palliatus group in San Martín, Peru, without evidence of intergradation and was treated as a separate species by Ridgely and Tudor (Birds of South America, vol. 2:230). 
If this is accepted the palliatus group would be called the Chestnut-backed Antshrike.  However, the two groups are vocally similar.

Thamnophilus bridgesi   BLACK-HOODED ANTSHRIKE.  Forest undergrowth, edge, thickets, second-growth woodland, mangroves.  Pacific lowlands to 1100 m of w Costa Rica and w Panama.
Thamnophilus nigriceps   BLACK ANTSHRIKE.  Humid forest undergrowth, edge, dense second growth.  Lowlands to 750 m of e Panama and n,c Colombia.
Thamnophilus praecox   COCHA ANTSHRIKE.  Lower growth and edge of frequently-flooded varzea forest, especially along streams and backwaters.  Known only from ne Ecuador. 
Thamnophilus nigrocinereus   BLACKISH-GREY ANTSHRIKE.  River island forest, mangroves, humid forest.  Lowlands to 500 m, e of Andes, of se Colombia, s Venezuela, French Guiana and n, Amazonian Brazil, incl. Mexiana and Marajó is.

Thamnophilus cryptoleucus   CASTELNAU'S ANTSHRIKE.  River island forest.  Lowlands to
300 m, e of Andes, in extreme se Colombia, ne Ecuador, ne Peru and w Amazonian Brazil. 
Sometimes placed in Myrmeciza, or treated as a subspecies of T. nigrocinereus.
Thamnophilus aethiops   WHITE-SHOULDERED ANTSHRIKE.  Humid forest, second growth.  Lowlands to 500 m, e of Andes, from se Colombia and s Venezuela s through e Ecuador and e Peru to n Bolivia and Amazonian,e Brazil.  Plumage and vocal variation suggest that more than one species may be included under this name, but the vocalizations of all subspecies are not known.
Thamnophilus unicolor   UNIFORM ANTSHRIKE.  Forest edge.  Andes, 900-2700 m of Colombia, w,e Ecuador and ne Peru.

Thamnophilus schistaceus   PLAIN-WINGED ANTSHRIKE.  Forest.  Lowlands to 500 m, e of Andes, of se Colombia s through e Ecuador, e Peru, n,e Bolivia and w Amazonian Brazil s to nw Argentina.  Records from Argentina are questionable.
Thamnophilus murinus   MOUSE-COLORED ANTSHRIKE.  Humid forest, savanna.  Lowlands to 1300 m, e of Andes, from se Colombia, s Venezuela and Guianas s through e Ecuador to ne Peru and n, Amazonian Brazil.
Thamnophilus aroyae   UPLAND ANTSHRIKE.  Forest edge, second growth, bamboo.  Andean slopes, 1200-1500 m, of se Peru and c Bolivia.
Thamnophilus punctatus   SLATY ANTSHRIKE.  Humid forest undergrowth, savanna, second-growth woodland, scrub.

 T. p. atrinucha  Lowlands to 1500 m from Belize and e Guatemala s on Caribbean slope to Costa Rica, Panama, wc Colombia, incl. I. Gorgona, and w Ecuador.  Probably a distinct species, differing in behavior and vocalizations from T. p. punctatus.
 T. p. punctatus  E of Andes, in e Colombia, w,s,ne Venezuela, Guianas, n Peru, n,e Bolivia and Amazonian,se Brazil.

Thamnophilus insignis   STREAK-BACKED ANTSHRIKE.  Humid forest.  Pantepui, 900-2000 m, of s Venezuela.
Thamnophilus amazonicus   AMAZONIAN ANTSHRIKE.  Stream edge thickets in forest, second growth.  Lowlands to 500 m, e of Andes in extreme e Colombia, s Venezuela and nw Amazonian Brazil; lowlands to 1300 m from se Colombia, se Venezuela and Guianas s through e Peru to n Bolivia and Amazonian,c Brazil.  The subspecies cinereiceps is sometimes treated as a separate species, but its relationships with adjacent races are poorly understood.  The name T. ruficollis has been suppressed (I.C.Z.N. 1981 Opinion 1180  Bull. Zool. Nomen. 38:120-121); it is uncertain whether it refers to cinereiceps or to amazonicus.

Thamnophilus caerulescens   VARIABLE ANTSHRIKE.  Forest undergrowth, riparian brush, savanna.

 The status of some populations is uncertain and two or more species may be involved. 
T. c. melanochrous, aspersiventer and connectens have been treated as separate species, or the first
two have been combined.

 T. c. aspersiventer  Andes of wc Bolivia in La Paz and Cochabamba.

 T. c. gilvigaster  Lowlands of se Brazil, Uruguay and ne Argentina.  Sometimes treated as a separate species and has been reported to occur with T. caerulescens in n Argentina.

Thamnophilus ruficapillus   RUFOUS-CAPPED ANTSHRIKE.  Forest undergrowth, riparian thickets.

 T. r. marcapatae  Andes to 2450 m of Cuzco and Puno, Peru.  Has been treated as a species, but is vocally similar to ruficapillus and the race subfasciatus (c,n Bolivia) is intermediate in morphology.
 T. r. ruficapillus  Lowlands of n Paraguay, se Brazil, Uruguay and ne Argentina.  T. r. marcapatae appears to be connected to ruficapillus by an intermediate population.

Pygiptila stellaris   SPOT-WINGED ANTSHRIKE.  Humid forest.  Lowlands to 750 m, e of Andes, from se Colombia, s Venezuela and Guianas s through e Ecuadorand e Peru to n Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil.
Megastictus margaritatus   PEARLY ANTSHRIKE.  Humid forest.  Lowlands to 500 m, e of Andes, in se Colombia, s Venezuela, ne Peru and w Amazonian Brazil.
Neoctantes niger   BLACK BUSHBIRD.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Lowlands to 500 m, e of Andes, of se Colombia, e Ecuador, ne Peru and w Amazonian Brazil.
Clytoctantes alixii   RECURVE-BILLED BUSHBIRD.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Lowlands to 1000 m of nw,nc Colombia and nw Venezuela.
Clytoctantes atrogularis   RONDONIA BUSHBIRD or BLACK-THROATED BUSHBIRD.  Humid forest undegrowth.  Known only from the type specimen from se Brazil.  Apparently a distinct species related to C. alixii.

Xenornis setifrons   SPECKLED ANTSHRIKE.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Lowlands to 600 m of e Panama and nw Colombia.
Thamnistes anabatinus   RUSSET ANTSHRIKE.  Humid forest, second-growth, thickets.  Lowlands to 1300 m from Mexico in Tabasco and Oaxaca s on Caribbean slope to Nicaragua, both slopes of Costa Rica and Panama and w Colombia and w Ecuador; lowlands to 1500 m, e of Andes, in se Colombia, sw Venezuela, e Ecuador, e Peru and c Bolivia.  The isolated southern race, rufescens, may be a separate species.
Dysithamnus stictothorax   SPOT-BREASTED ANTVIREO.  Forest.  Se Brazil.
Dysithamnus mentalis   PLAIN ANTVIREO.  Forest undergrowth, second growth.  Lowlands and mts. to 2450 m from Mexico in e Tabasco, Campeche and Belize to Panama and from Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago s, w of Andes, to nw Peru and, e of Andes, through e Ecuador, c,e Peru, c Bolivia; lowlands of e Paraguay, c,e Brazil and ne Argentina.

Dysithamnus striaticeps   STREAK-CROWNED ANTVIREO.  Humid forest, second growth.  Lowlands to 800 m on Caribbean slope of se Honduras, e Nicaragua and Costa Rica.  A record from Panama is erroneous.
Dysithamnus puncticeps   SPOT-CROWNED ANTVIREO.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Lowlands to 1000 m of se Costa Rica, Panama, w Colombia and w Ecuador.
Dysithamnus xanthopterus   RUFOUS-BACKED ANTVIREO.  Forest.  Coastal se Brazil.
Dysithamnus leucostictus   WHITE-STREAKED ANTVIREO.  Humid forest.  Mts., 900-1900 m, of e Colombia, w,n Venezuela and e Ecuador.  Usually considered conspecific with D. plumbeus, but distinct morphologically and ecologically, and they have widely allopatric ranges.  The race tucuyensis is reported to differ vocally and may be a separate species.

Dysithamnus plumbeus   PLUMBEOUS ANTVIREO.  Forest.  Lowlands of n Bolivia; se Brazil.

 The species leucostictus, plumbeus and occidentalis are sometimes placed in Thamnomanes.  They are typical Dysithamnus antvireos in behavior.

Dysithamnus occidentalis   BICOLORED ANTVIREO.  Forest.  Andes, 500-1200 m, of sw Colombia and e Ecuador.  Sometimes placed in Thamnomanes, but it is vocally and behaviorally a Dysithamnus.
Thamnomanes ardesiacus   SATURNINE ANTSHRIKE.  Humid forest undergrowth, edge, bushy areas.  Lowlands to 1100 m, e of Andes, from se Colombia, s Venezuela and Guianas s through e Ecuador and ne,c Peru to n Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil; lowlands of ne Peru extreme ne Bolivia and w Amazonian Brazil.
Thamnomanes caesius   CINEREOUS ANTSHRIKE.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Lowlands to 1000 m, e of Andes, of e Colombia, s Venezuela and Guianas s through e Ecuador to ne Peru and Amazonian,n,e Brazil and ne Bolivia.  The races glaucus + persimilis have been treated as a separate species.

Thamnomanes schistogynus   BLUISH-SLATE ANTSHRIKE.  Forest undergrowth, bamboo thickets, second growth, esp. along streams.  Lowlands of e Peru, n Bolivia and sw Amazonian Brazil.  Has been considered a subspecies of T. caesius, from which it differs little in behavior, but apparently they are sympatric in one area and not known to intergrade anywhere.
 Myrmotherula:  Antwrens  A large, complex genus of small, short-tailed antbirds; most occur in the humid forest in the lowlands of nc South America, many in the Amazonian drainage.  The greatest diversity of species is at approximately 400 m elevation near the base of the Andes in w Amazonia between ca. 2°N and 13°S latitude, where up to eight species have been observed in a flock.  Few species occur above 600 m and virtually none above 1300 m.  Whitney (1994. Auk 111:469-474) discussed behavior, vocalizations, and possible relationships among M. spodionota, behni, sunensis and M. schisticolor interior.

Myrmotherula klagesi   KLAGES'S ANTWREN.  Forest undergrowth.  Known only from a few localities in w Brazil, lower Amazon in w Pará from Óbidos to Santarém.

Myrmotherula ambigua   YELLOW-THROATED ANTWREN.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Lowlands to 300 m, e of Andes, of se Colombia, sw Venezuela and nw Amazonian Brazil.
Myrmotherula surinamensis   STREAKED ANTWREN.  Riparian growth, swampy areas.  Lowlands to 1100 m from Panama, w,nc,se Colombia, s Venezuela and Guianas s, w of Andes, to w Ecuador and, e of Andes, through e Ecuador and e Peru to n Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil.  The subspecies pacifica is vocally distinct and probably is a separate species.

Myrmotherula leucophthalma   WHITE-EYED ANTWREN.  Humid forest, bamboo thickets, tall second growth near streams.  Lowlands, e of Andes, of se Peru, n Bolivia and Brazil.  The races sordida and phaeonota have been reported from the w bank of the Rio Tapajós, but sympatry has not been confirmed and some specimens of phaeonota appear to be intermediate.

Myrmotherula spodionota   FOOTHILL ANTWREN.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Foothills, 500-1100 m, of Andes on e slope of e Ecuador and ne Peru.  Sometimes treated as a subspecies of M. leucophthalma or of M. haematonota.  Refs. Myrmotherula ornata   ORNATE ANTWREN.  Forest, bamboo thickets.  Lowlands to 1200 m, e of Andes, from se Colombia s through e Ecuador to ne Peru and Brazil; e,se Peru and n Bolivia.  More than one species may be involved in the subspecies of M. ornata.  1. ornata + saturata.  2. atrogularis + meridionalis.  3. hoffmannsi.  Ref. Myrmotherula axillaris   WHITE-FLANKED ANTWREN.  Humid forest, edge, second growth.  Lowlands to 1000 m on Caribbean slope of se Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, both slopes of Panama and from w,n,e Colombia, w,s Venezuela, Trinidad and Guianas s, w of andes, to w Ecuador and, e of Andes, through e Ecuador and c,e Peru to n,e Bolivia and Amazonian,e Brazil.  M. a. luctuosa is vocally distinct from Middle American and w S. American populations, but vocalizations of Amazonian populations have not been described.

Myrmotherula grisea   ASHY ANTWREN.  Forest.  Known only from Andean foothills, 450-1100 m, of c Bolivia.
Myrmotherula unicolor   UNICOLORED ANTWREN.  Forest.  Lowlands of se Brazil from Espírito Santo s to ne Rio Grande do Sul.  If the population in Alagoas, M. u. snowi, is included in unicolor, the range includes Alagoas; if M. snowi is considered a separate species it is restricted to Alagoas near Murici on the Pedra Branca, 400-550 m.  Ref. Herpsilochmus dugandi  DUGAND'S ANTWREN.  Lowlands to 500 m, e of Andes, of se Colombia and ne Ecuador.  Often considered to be a race of H. sticturus, but Ridgely and Tudor 1994. Birds of S. America, 2:258, treat dugandi as a full species because it is widely allopatric to sticturus and female plumages differ.  They are vocally similar.

Formicivora serrana   SERRA ANTWREN.  Serra woodland, scrub, coastal restinga.  Lowlands to 1000 m of se Brazil.  Often considered conspecific with melanogaster but differs in morphology and ecology.  The subspecies littoralis was treated as a species by Ridgley and Tudor 1994. Birds of S. America 2:302, primarily because of habitat differences.

Formicivora erythronotos   BLACK-HOODED ANTWREN.  Forest undergrowth.  Se Brazil.  The inclusion of this species in Formicivora follows Pacheco 1988. Bull. Brit. Orn. Club 104:179-182.
Formicivora rufa   RUSTY-BACKED ANTWREN.  Savanna, woody scrub, mostly in dry open areas.  Locally in lowlands, e of Andes, in Surinam, Amazonian,c Brazil, e Peru, n,e Bolivia and Paraguay.
Drymophila ferruginea   FERRUGINOUS ANTBIRD.  Forest undergrowth, bamboo.  Lowlands to 1250 m of se Brazil.
Drymophila rubricollis   BERTONI'S ANTBIRD.  Forest undergrowth.  Coastal mts. of se Brazil, ne Paraguay and ne Argentina.  Willis (1988. Rev. Brasil. Biol. 4:431-438) showed that rubricollis is distinct from D. ferruginea, with which it had been confused.

Terenura sicki   ALAGOAS ANTWREN or ORANGE-BELLIED ANTWREN.  Forest.  Known only from ne Brazil in ne Pernambuco.  A distinctive, recently described species (Teixera and Gonzaga. 1983. Bull. Brit. Orn. Club 103:133-135).
Terenura callinota   RUFOUS-RUMPED ANTWREN.  Humid forest.

Cercomacra tyrannina   DUSKY ANTBIRD.  Humid forest undergrowth, edge, thickets, second growth.  Lowlands to 2100 m from Mexico in Veracruz, n Oaxaca, Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche and s Quintana Roo s on Caribbean slope to Honduras, both slopes of Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, Colombia, w,s Venezuela and Guianas s, w of Andes, to w Ecuador and, e of Andes, to n Amazonian, ne Brazil.

 More than one species apparently involved.  In the Manaus area the form laeta differs vocally from tyrannina elsewhere in its range.  Laeta ranges from the Manaus area e to around Belém in e Pará and n Maranhão; around Belém it occurs in the same habitat as C. tyrannina saturatior.  The voice of the disjunct race sabinoi is unknown, and could be a separate species or allied to laeta.  Ref. Ridgely and Tudor 1994. Birds of S. America, 2:306.

Cercomacra ferdinandi   BANANAL ANTBIRD.  Forest undergrowth.  Known only from c Brazil.  Sometimes considered conspecific with C. nigrescens but may be related to C. melanaria.
Cercomacra serva   BLACK ANTBIRD.  Forest undergrowth, bamboo thickets, second growth.  Lowlands to 500 m, e of Andes, of se Colombia, e Ecuador, e Peru, n Bolivia and sw Amazonian Brazil.

 H. c. flavescens appears to be a subspecies of cantator, but subflava is a distinct form of the foothills, perhaps a separate species, although mixed pairs have been reported.

Hypocnemoides maculicauda   BAND-TAILED ANTBIRD.  Riparian thickets, swampy forest, lake edges.  Lowlands, e of Andes, in ne,se Peru, n,e Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil.  Closely related to and possibly an allospecies of H. melanopogon, but there seems to be a range overlap in Amazonia.

Percnostola schistacea   SLATE-COLORED ANTBIRD.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Lowlands to 500 m, e of Andes, of se Colombia, e Peru and w Amazonian Brazil.
Percnostola leucostigma   SPOT-WINGED ANTBIRD.  Humid forest undergrowth, bushy savanna, esp. near water.  Lowlands to 1500 m, locally to 2500 m, e of Andes, from e Colombia, nw,s Venezuela and Guianas s through e Ecuador and e Peru to n Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil.  Sometimes treated as a subspecies of P. schistacea; sometimes place in the genus Sclateria and in Schistocichla in Ridgely and Tudor 1994. Birds of S. America, 2:329.  Variation in leg color and vocalizations suggest that more than one species is involved, but many taxa are poorly known.

Percnostola caurensis   CAURA ANTBIRD.  Humid forest.  Lowlands to 1300 m of s Venezuela and adj. nw Brazil.
Percnostola lophotes   WHITE-LINED ANTBIRD.  Bamboo thickets, cane, humid forest edge.  Lowlands of e Peru and n Bolivia.  Includes P. macrolopha, originally considered related to P. rufifrons but is based on an adult male P. lophotes.  P. lophotes may not be a Percnostola.
Myrmeciza berlepschi   STUB-TAILED ANTBIRD.  Forest.  Pacific lowlands to 400 m of w Colombia and nw Ecuador.  Formerly called Sipia berlepschi, but Sipia is not distinct from Myrmeciza. Myrmeciza atrothorax   BLACK-THROATED ANTBIRD.  River edge scrub, second growth.  Lowlands to 1600 m, e of Andes, of e Colombia, s Venezuela, Guianas, e Peru, n,e Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil, incl. I. Marajó.  Includes M. stictothorax, known only from two specimens from Rio Tapajós, now regarded as an aberrant M. atrothorax.  Differs behaviorally from other species of Myrmeciza, perhaps generically separable.  Ref. Gymnopithys bicolor   BICOLORED ANTBIRD.  Humid forest undergrowth, savanna.  Lowlands to 1700 m on Caribbean slope of n,e Honduras and Nicaragua, both slopes of Costa Rica and Panama, w,nc Colombia and w Ecuador.  Closely related to leucaspis.  Hackett (1992. Wilson Bull. 105:301-315) found them to be similar, but genetically discrete.

Gymnopithys salvini   WHITE-THROATED ANTBIRD.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Lowlands, e of Andes, in e Peru, n Bolivia and w Amazonian Brazil.
Myrmornis torquata   WING-BANDED ANTBIRD.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Lowlands to 900 m of se Nicaragua, c,e Panama and nw,n Colombia; lowlands to 1200 m, e of Andes, of se Colombia, e Ecuador, ne Peru and s Amazonian Brazil.  Appears to be closest to Gymnopithys.  The subspecies stictoptera is sometimes treated as a species, but is behaviorally similar to torquata.

Rhegmatorhina melanosticta   HAIRY-CRESTED ANTBIRD.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Lowlands to 600 m, e of Andes, of se Colombia, e Ecuador, e Peru, n Bolivia and sw Amazonian Brazil.  The race brunneiceps closely approaches the range of melanosticta without evidence of intergradation and may be a separate species.

 Although there is extensive plumage variation, the behavior of all populations is similar.  Reports of sympatry appear to be based on mislabeled specimens.

Phlegopsis nigromaculata   BLACK-SPOTTED BARE-EYE.  Humid forest undergrowth.  Lowlands to 500 m, e of Andes, from e Colombia s through e Ecuador and e Peru to n,e Bolivia and ne, Amazonian Brazil.  Phlegopsis barringeri, known only from the type specimen from se Colombia, is now regarded as a hybrid P. nigromaculata x P. erythroptera.  (Graves 1992.
