forest edge.
*
D. A. Turner (pers. comm.) reports that the East African List Committee
consider all East African, Ethiopian and Arabian montane nightjars to be
races of C. poliocephalus.
They have similar whistled songs and the varying amount of white in
the tail is clinal. All forms are allopatric, but the minor vocal
differences are viewed as 'dialects', not worthy of specific status.
The relationship between poliocephalus and pectoralis is unclear.
Fry, et al. (1988. Birds of Africa, vol. 3, p. 157) include nigriscapularis,
poliocephalus, ruwenzorii and pectoralis in the "Caprimulgus pectoralis,
superspecies." Dowsett and Dowsett-Lemaire (1993) describe the "The
Caprimulgus pectoralis complex" as including nigriscapularis. They
depend to a large extent on vocalizations to define species limits and
lump populations that are widely allopatric as subspecies of a single species.
The present arrangement is an attempt to interpret several opinions
and it seems obvious that the situation is complex and not yet resolved.
