Mongolia, e,s China, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Kuril Is.; lowlands to 1500
m in Malaya, Sumatra, Borneo, Java and Lesser Sunda Is. Vagrant or
rare migrant in w Alaska. Resident Malaysian populations (lepidus)
formerly were treated as a subspecies of C. poliocephalus.
The northern migratory race (horsfieldi) meets
the nominate race (C. s. saturatus) in China with little or no intergradation,
but the contact has not been studied in detail.
