Mozambique and South Africa. Recorded in every subSaharan African
country except Eritrea, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda and Burundi.
A rufous color morph formerly was treated as a
separate species, C. epomidis.
Dowsett and Dowsett-Lemaire (1993, p. 335) erroneously
state that "Sibley and Monroe (1990) "have resurrected the idea that C.
epomidis is a good species." We did not. See S&M p. 104.

Thickets, scrub, bush. From extreme se Zambia, c Malawi and se Tanzania
s through e Botswana and Mozambique to ne,e,s S. Africa in Transvaal, Orange
Free State, Natal and Cape Province w to Cape Town. Sometimes included
in superciliosus, but the East African List Committee consider them to
be separate species (D. A. Turner, pers. comm.) as do the South African
List Committee (see Sinclair, et al. (1993.
Birds of Southern Africa). Dowsett and
Dowsett-Lemaire (1993) disagree and note that "birds resembling hybrids
... occur in the Middle Zambezi valley in the Feira (=Luangwa) area of
Zambia".
