THE COMMON, BROUGHTON GIFFORD, ADDRESS OF MANY OF
THE GAY FAMILY IN THE 19th CENTURY |
|
||||||||||||||||||||
The Gays are found in Broughton Gifford, Wilts,
although where they first came from is unknown – there seem to be a lot of
them in the village, as well as in surrounding areas, so they must have been
established there for some time – there are Gays buried in Broughton Gifford
cemetery as far back as 1623. The first certain ancestor is THOMAS GAY, born
1763? – apart from a line who went to live in Bath, Somerset, it was his
grandson EPHRAIM GAY whose family started leaving the village: his second son
JOHN GAY emigrated first to Canada, then to Australia, and the family is
still flourishing there, and his two youngest sons, HENRY GAY III and GEORGE EDWARD GAY, moved,
eventually to Ealing, Middx, and set up
Gay Brothers, an engineering firm, in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, later
Hampton, Middx. HENRY GAY III had no children, but
GEORGE EDWARD GAY, the author’s ancestor, had seven – unfortunately in an
outbreak of diphtheria in 1921 his wife, a son and a daughter died, and the
second son died in 1933, but the families of his four surviving daughters have
spread out all over the world. There is also a branch in Essex, although it is
not certain how its founder EDWIN GAY is related to the rest of the family. |
|||||||||||||||||||||
FACT: in the 1891 England & Wales census, 6%
of Gays (244 out of 4057) lived in Wiltshire – even more lived in
neighbouring Gloucestershire |

● in the marriage record, James is described as a weaver, age 20,
and Ann age 25 ● no baptism records can be found for the children after Charlotte(a)
– either they are not yet available online, or James did not have them
baptized in a Church of England church ● neither can any burial records be found for James and Ann(e),
so perhaps their funerals were also non Church of England |
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
NOTES ON JACOB GAY II: ● there were 2 Jacob Gays born about 1819-21 in Broughton Gifford,
both sons of “James Gay, weaver” ● unfortunately, as of 2017, no baptism for either can be found

● the author
previously though that Emma married – Ellis, and was the mother of May Ellis,
born about 1879, London, MiddxCENSUS,
(SEE BELOW), but now that Emma’s marriage certificate, 1873, has come online
(APR 2017), it would theoretically not be possible that Emma was her mother ● her
great-grandson comments (2017): ► according to
my mother [Margaret Godfrey Aldridge], Emma was very religious - was religion
a major cultural element in the Gay family? If so, was it non-conformist or
Anglican? (see notes on EPHRAIM GAY’s family,
above, although there MAY be no connection between the 2 families’ religious
leanings) ► she also used to tell us that
Emma died during the bombing of Bath in 1942, but she is not included in the
list of bombing casualties on-line, despite the fact that Shakespeare Avenue,
where she lived, was affected at one end, and nor is this story supported by
the fact that the major raids were in April and she died in August |
|||||||||||||||
● the marriage
certificate and record are for Charles Lowday
Godfrey, but in the certificate his father is shown as “Charles Lowday”, whereas the death and probate records show plain
Charles Godfrey ● no birth
record for Charles Lowday Godfrey can be found -
there is no birth record in 1850, as his son states ● but there is
a © baptism record for a Charles Godfrey,
baptized 1 MAY 1850, Street, Somerset, mother Anna Godfrey, no father shown -
Chilton Polden, which Charles Lowday
gave in the census as his birthplace, is about 13 km from Street ● this could
explain matters, why he was variously called Charles Godfrey and Charles Lowday Godfrey – his mother was Anna Godfrey, and his
father Charles Lowday, as he stated in his marriage
certificate, which would make his legal name “Charles Godfrey” ● the family
cannot be found in the 1851 census, but the 1861 census lists Charles Godfrey
41, carpenter, Christina Godfrey 36, and various children,
including Charles Godfrey 10 (so born about 1851) ● the 1871
census lists Charles Godfrey 51, carpenter, Christiana (=
“Anna”?) Godfrey 45, various children, including William James Godfrey
15, Frederick Lowday Godfrey 14, Edgar
Randall Godfrey 5 months, all except Christiana born at Chilton Polden ● so there was
obviously some connection between the Godfrey and Lowday
families ● nothing more
is known about him |

James, Ellen and the 2 elder children disappear after the 1881 census, but no

● in the 1891 census she was at
Emily Gay II’s

Ellen Gay I Sedg(e)berry’s
home, 22, “boarder” ● the author previously thought
that she was the daughter of Emma Gay, but Emma was married in 1879 ● so it is unclear whose daughter
she was - she might even have been the niece of one of Henry I’s children’s spouses ● in her possible birth record, no
mother's maiden name is given, meaning that that the mother’s surname
was Ellis, and no father was shown ● the possible baptism record shows her as daughter of
Ellen Ellis, single woman, residence Epsom Common, Surrey ● so perhaps she was the daughter
of Ellen Gay I Sedg(e)berry,
who did not marry until 1881 ● nothing more is known about her |

● Arthur Charles worked in
Argentina for the Buenos Aires & Pacific Railway, Argentina (a British
company)PASSENGER LISTS ● his grandson comments (2017): ► he went initially to Uruguay,
then to Argentina, and somehow persuaded his wife to join him! - they lived
midway between Buenos Aires and the Andes, in very primitive and socially
isolated conditions, before retiring(?) to Buenos Aires, then Mar del Plata,
where we think his wife died, and he then moved back to England (where he
married again) ► my understanding is that he was
in a fairly humble situation in England, but did quite well for himself in
Argentina, although there is a story (uncorroborated) that my father helped
support him in retirement, and I don't think Arthur was profligate - this may
be why he and his wife retired in Argentina, because they knew they could not
afford to live in England – but when she died, he decided to move back to his
family neighbourhood in Bath (was Ada a childhood sweetheart?), and perhaps
my father subsidised him at that point - this is all speculation - I
don't get the impression he was a well-educated man ► the railway company paid his
passage to and from England every three years - whether they paid for him to
go first class, or whether he paid for the up-grade, I don't know [the family
appear in several passenger lists between 1919 and 1953] ► during their stays in England, the
family used to stay in Brighton (rather than Bath) because Arthur Charles’ wife
Margaret Hope had a close relation there - her sister Winifred was the
manageress of a Brighton branch of "Fuller's Tea Rooms" - one of
the addresses they gave in the passenger lists - 24 St George's Terrace - is
where Winnie lived ► I have a letter written by Winnie to my mother about her immediate neighbourhood
being bombed two years earlier: "the front door blown into the
bathroom" .... "I have never
really got over it" ► my mother's school was in
Brighton (Westcombe School - now a block of flats),
and "Auntie Winnie" used to take the
twins out at (some?) weekends, and treat them to tea and cakes in the Tea
Room ► I don't know when she died, and I
never met her. She mentions some people in the letter, but there is no way of
knowing whether they are related in any way ► my mother (Margaret Godfrey
Aldridge) was known as Margo to distinguish her from Margaret, her mother (Margaret
Hope Bann Godfrey) ● in Arthur Charles’ daughters’
baptism record (1912) his abode is given as Argentina, so he was obviously
already living there, and perhaps he and Margaret Hope were married there |

children by the first marriage ► she lived in Buenos Aires,
Argentina all her life as a member of the extensive (as it was) English
community there ► and died there, I don't know when
- perhaps five years before my mother (1999)? I'm only guessing |
