● Joseph was an artist,
as was Elizabeth ● it is said that he was
a member of the Royal AcademyFAM, but
his name isn’t found in the Directory of Members
(checked 2009) ● it is also
said that Elizabeth “kept the family”FAM ● Joseph left £320 in his
will, Elizabeth £537 14s 10d |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
● mentions are
found online of a British Victorian artist Joseph Bunker, “active
1871-90”, although one says “died 1890” ● The Dictionary of British and Irish botanists and
horticulturists says "BUNKER,
JOSEPH (fl 1880s-1890s) Of Bath,
Somerset - exhibited flower paintings at the Royal Academy and New
Water-colour Society" ● An art historian reports that the records
of the Royal Institute of Painters in
Watercolours show that he exhibited
still life subjects between 1883 and 1903 as follows: 1883
No. 374 “Plums” (address – 5 The Paragon, Bath) 1884
No. 429 “Purple Grapes and Wallflowers” (Paragon Art Studios, 15 Bladud Buildings, Bath) 1886
No. 1031 “Fruit” 1903
No. 10 “Plums” (£10-10s) (c/o Herald Office, Langport) (the
addresses quoted are possibly where he had his studio, or his “business
address” – Langport is near Twerton,
Joseph’s home) However, until a
fuller biography of this Joseph Bunker can be found, there is still no
certainty that this was Joseph VIII ● these notes have been prepared with the help of Joseph’s Great-grandsons in Australia and China ●
the following mention was found in Christie’s online auction catalogue for
1998: Joseph Bunker Still Life with Grapes, Hazelnuts, Orange and Apples pencil and watercolour 7½ x 11¼ in (19 x 28.5 cm) estimate £200 - £300 ($326 - $489) price realized £115 ($188) ●
as the subject was similar to that of paintings still in possession of the
familiar, it is likely that this was actually Joseph VIII |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
● Joseph’s
Chapman great-grandson was told a story by his uncle Edwin Arnold Locke and
his father Sidney Ernest Chapman, that Joseph worked for years with his
artist friend William Harbutt to make a modelling clay - at some point
Joseph decided that it was 'prostituting' art and he left Harbutt
to it, and soon after Harbutt perfected the
modelling clay, and plasticine was marketed ● the
following has been found in Wikipedia: “Plasticine
was formulated by art teacher William Harbutt of Bathampton, in Bath, England, in 1897 …” |

● the author
previously had this man, his maternal grandmother’s brother, as Joseph
Arnold Bunker I,
but has now renamed Joseph (Arnold) Bunker for the following reasons: ● the birth
record is for plain Joseph Bunker, the marriage record for Joseph A.
Bunker, the 1928-30 electoral registers for Joseph Arnold Bunker, his
father’s will names plain Joseph Bunker, but the probate details 1934
“Joseph Arnold Bunker, hairdresser”, the 1939 Register plain Joseph
Bunker ● the author
previously thought that the death record for Joseph A. Bunker, died Q2 1937, Brentford,
Middx R/D, age 52 (so born about 1885) was his, but if he was listed in the
1939 Register, it cannot be ● the only
other possible death record is for plain Joseph Bunker, died Q4 1970, Southampton,
Hants R/D, age 81 (so born about 1889, which is more correct), Southampton, Hants
R/D being reasonably near Christchurch, Hants, where Joseph (Arnold) was
living in the 1939 Register ● this would
also possibly why his widow emigrated in 1973 ● so perhaps
his correct name was actually plain Joseph Bunker, the “Arnold” being added
later ● ufortunately no probate details are available, either for
the 1937 or the 1970 deaths ● there is a
family legend that Joseph (Arnold) MAY have had legal problems, but no
evidence has so far been found |

NOTES: ► Roman numerals after a person’s
name, eg. John I, are purely to distinguish
different people with the same name ► The code before each name, for
example 6B12, is based on the
following principles: the 1st
figure, in this case 6, refers to
the generation, ie. Generation 6 the 2nd
letter, in this case B, refers to
the family, ie the Bunker and associated families the 3rd
figure, in this case 12, refers to
number of identified children, including possible children, for that
particular generation R/D = Registration District R/O = Register Office (for an explanation
