JOHN DURHAM (1) and his wife Elizabeth had a daughter Elizabeth (qv), baptized  20 MAR 1747 at Sarratt, Herts (where Willliam Durham I’s sons were baptized) – this, and the mentions of Watford below, are the only other mention of Sarratt/Watford found in the records so far, leading us to believe that they were not the Durhams’ places of origin – this John could have been Williams I’s father

Reverend EDWARD DURHAM, Tasmania, Australia

a correspondent in New Zealand visited the site of Port Arthur Prison in Tasmania, Australia, where convicts were sent from Britain from 1830 onwards to serve out their sentence:

● many buildings are still standing and kept in good repair, whilst of others just the ruins remain, one being the large church constructed in 1835-6

● at one time the vicar was The Reverend Edward Durham

● a PLAQUE tells the history of the church and the part The Reverend Durham had in it - it seems like he was quite a force to be reckoned with, and  had no time for the Catholic Father O'Halloran, nor the School Master John White. nor did he get on well with the 3 successive Commandants that were in charge of the Colony during his time there!

● the church was used from 1835 until the convict prison was closed in 1877

● all that can be found online is: “...... the Reverend Edward Durham, a Church of Ireland clergyman ….. in 1843, .......

● this means he was there in the 1840's, and presumably Irish

● he is not mentioned in Church of England and Ireland records

● the name is too common for any certain marriage or death records to be found for him in Australia

● so nothing more is known about him

NOTES:

Roman numerals after a person’s name, eg. William I, are purely to distinguish different people with the same name
