Technique > Technique exercises 1

The following examples aren't so catchy. You'd have to consider them as
strange groups of notes... very far from music... however a good chance to
play something different.

Example 1
-wav 165 Kb - 22050 Hz 8 bit Mono--------

I find this exercise of sweep picking very funny because involves a difficult
widening of the left hand with a simple repetitive 2 1 4 (4 1 2) scheme of
fingering.

Example 2

This sweep is based over the G7 diminished and it's look like an arpeggio.
Anyway good picking.

trying to shift left of position.

Example 4

This sweep picking sounds very cool. The left hand moves on a position like
the diminished one but through the chords of G11 and C11. In the 8th and 9th
bar there are 5 notes, so I've tryed to give a rhytmic division, meaning that
the note underwritten with a "(" is half time long that the one underwritten
with "$".

Example 7
-wav 96 Kb - 22050 Hz 8 bit Mono--------

Actualy this exercise of sweep picking, even from the first notes seems to be
exaggerated, in fact E and F at the 12th and 13th fret may be played on the A
string at the 7th and 8th fret avoiding an inconvenient position for the left
hand. I've found this lick trying to beat out by picks, legatos and slides an
idea I had in my mind, so the "exaggerated legatos" need to be kept as they
are.

Example 8

This exercise serves to improve the indipendence between the left hand's
fingers. In fact it's easy to go quickly "up and down through the scales", but
play close note with lightly different fingering beteewn string and string
isn't banal at all, aboveall if we want to keep the rhytm.

Example 9
-wav 289 Kb - 22050 Hz 8 bit Mono--------

This exercise, performed on the tree lower strings only, is based on the G
major scale. It's made up by a series of changes between crescent position of
the scale. For every position we can distinguish a dissendent phase, in which
all the notes of the scale are picked, and an asending phase, in which only
certain notes are arpeggioed.

Example 10
-wav 150 Kb - 22050 Hz 8 bit Mono---------

Here's a "greedy" exercise. First of all it's played over beautifull notes,
they are only some of a minor scale and this create an atmosfere suspended
and pressing (I feel it so). Then it's easy because they are tree notes for
string, played in triplets, and even with pull offs and hammer ons that
semplify the performance.

This E7 sweep (don't perform it too quick) create a particular effect, almost
of slowdown. During the arpeggio groups of two equal notes are consecutively
played in a 3/4 rhytmical, breaking then the cadence of the time that we
aspect to hear every four notes, aboveall because of the regolarity of what we
are playing: groups of two notes.

neglect the first note of each bar.

This "little caprice" sounds too classic, but it's rich of ideas.
The first 6 bars are made up by two different lines played "together"; try to
play them apart and they will appear to you in all their simpleness.

The bars from the 7th to 10th propose a new melody in which you have to pay
attention to the time, in fact the 8th and 10th bars starts with the bend
release, bend started in the 7th and 9th bars.

The bars 11, 12 and 13 propose a sweep dessendent sequence. Note that the
sweep, made up by four notes eachone, aren't fit exactly in a bar, but they
are lightly out of phase respect to the metric. In this way the last note of
every sweep is strongly underlined by the time, so it seems we're playing
again two lines "together": one dissendent (17,16,14,12) and a series of
sweep.

The "little caprice" ends with three bars that "go up in alternated way" over
a D major arpeggio.
