You have decided to enter the 21st century finally and buy your first handheld device to help you navigate the country while staying plugged in to the rest of the world. What kind of device do you need? Well, it should be a GPS device that can show you the fastest route to take, door-to-door. It should estimate arrival times, show you where to find the nearest Carl's Jr., and recalculate your route if you take a wrong turn while readjusting your estimated arrival time. Did I mention all of the fun you will have by using your new handheld to go find hidden treasure on geocache adventures? If you're not familiar with geocaching, it is an outdoor game where a person uses a GPS device to locate a cache of treasures (usually of little or no monetary value).

Can You Get Everything In One Device?
Sure! You can have your cake and eat it too these days when it comes to handheld devices. You may be like me and want one small device that will do it all - a portable computer with a QWERTY keyboard, cell phone, GPS device, mp3 player, camera, and video recorder. What are the trade offs for having one device that does it all? It may do so many things that it does none of them well. You might be better off getting a PDA that is GPS enabled. Something else to consider is that with more functionality comes a steeper learning curve. Geeks aside, most of us do not want to have to spend hours learning how to use our gadgets. There should be a set of simple instructions for using your device as it was intended to be used.

What About Prices?
Prices vary wildly. You can get a decent Pocket PC/Phone/GPS Navigator by Pharos Science & Applications for around $200.00 or you could spend $500 on a GARMIN iQue 3600 Pocket PC/GPS. Just as with anything, there is a high-end to pocket PCs and GPS devices and there is a low end. If you plan on keeping your digital assistant for a few years it is probably wise to spend a bit more on the one you really want. However, if you are like many people these days, you have decided to upgrade your handheld every year or so. Thus, you should buy one on the lower end of the price spectrum. Whatever you buy, you will probably never use everything it is capable of so keep it simple. Make sure you do thorough research into what's available and what people are saying about it. You should also only buy the device that you can easily learn to use.
