Mouse and rat traps - Home Page

Why a home page about rat and mouse traps ?

Jan Klunder is collecting already for years mouse and rat traps and everything that comes with it like books, posters, documentation, old catalogues, etc.etc. Intrigued as he is about the human nature that time after time seeks new ways of solving a century-old problem: catching and/or killing mice and rats.
Me, being the mans nephew have been partly dragged into this passion. Going around markets and fairs it is always a great pleasure encountering new mousetraps, with the ever emerging question: why did I never encounter this one before ? The collection at this moment holds hundreds of different traps.
Mousetraps can assume many different shapes, ranging from the well-known snappers in all kinds of materials (even plastic) and sizes to trapping cages, block-traps, strangling cages, guillotines, etc.etc.
One wouldn't think it but there are even countries that have their own style of traps. For example in Italy the well known snapper trap (piece of wood with spring and latch attached that hits the mouse or rat in the neck) has been changed in a model under an angle of 90 degrees. Easy to put in a corner and easier to set without getting your fingers under the latch.
In northern countries of Europe the 'block-trap' is well known: a tripping mechanism connected with a heavy block of wood that hits and kills the animal from above.
Furthermore there are special kinds of traps for different mice and for special situations. An example are the hanging traps, especially designed for catching mice that are trying to eat food that is hanging from the ceiling like cheese, hams or sausages.
There are many, many types of traps and many different ways of catching and/or killing mice and rats. The human mind will probably never stop worrying about these relatively simple machines.
