Topography

This cave is known from centuries; into it there are several levels of tunnels that were separated by a rock diaphragm and had two entrances. A main river slowly flows in the lower tunnels, while the high levels are fossil, with beautiful concretions. Towards the end of the most long active branch there are higher halls with fantastic concretions (Crystal Hall).

The fauna has been longtimes studied, but, as usually, the list of the species is never complete. The author discover in 2000 a species of Buddelundiella, maybe the same of Bossea, and carry out methodic search per for the aquatic microfauna, in collaboration with dr. Fabio Stoch of Trieste.

Among the already described fauna of these caves, we list the following taxa and the zone of the cavities were they have been observed:

CRUSTACEA ISOPODA: Trichoniscus cfr. voltai on wooded debrits in the inner parts.

CRUSTACEA HARPACTICOIDA: Moraria michielettoae micro-crustacean found in the main river in 1955.

DIPLOPODA: Plectogona sanfilippoi sanfilippoi, on wood and organic debrits. Polydesmus sp., troglobite, on wood (new signalling).

CHILOPODA: Lithobius sp.

ARACHNIDA ARANEAE: Troglohyphantes pluto, along the fossil tunnels.

INSECTA TRICHOPTERA: Stenophylax permistus, on the walls, near the entrance.

INSECTA ORTHOPTERA: Dolichopoda ligustica near the entrance.

INSECTA CARABIDAE TRECHINAE: Duvalius carantii, near the lower entrance and in the higher levels.

INSECTA CARABIDAE SPHODRINI: Sphodropsis ghilianii, adults and a lot of larvas, in the fossil parts.

CHIROPTERA: Rhinolophus ferrumequinum in the fossil zones.
