THE NEW
YORK TIMES - 23 JUN 1939 - OBITUARIES Special to THE NEW YORK TIMES Yonkers, N.Y., June 22. - Mrs. Margaret Grey Wigley,
for years associated with the Yonkers Public Library, died yesterday at her
home here at the age of 58. Two sisters survive. ● no mention of her husband – is this of any significance? – now
that is been ascertained that she and YYY were divorced, ths lack of any mention is logical |

● a Charles E.
Wigley was a witness at William Roy’s 1st wedding, 1910 ● William Roy
signed his will 28 MAY 1959, as a resident of Seminole County, Florida, USA ● he left
everything to his wife, Frances Picton – there is
no mention of any children ● he
specifically disinherited all other possible lawful claimants, presumably his
a family source comments: ● “It is my
understanding (from my uncle [William Roy’s nephew]) that the 1st wife
died while they were married”, ie. they did not
divorce – if William Roy married Frances Picton in
1932, he must have divorced from Margaret Grey ● “According
to what we have seen in research and been reported by the family - neither
wife produced offspring”remaining surviving
brother, Arthur Greenhalgh, and/or his niece and
nephews |

● their son
Robert Smith’s daughter comments that her father moved to Boulder City approx.
1948, as he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation on the Hoover Dam project ● apparently
the sole reason for the existence of Boulder City was the need to house workers
contracted to build the dam ● in 1955 he moved
to Las Vegas, Nevada, and in 1960 to Corcoran, California ● Chester Greenhalgh’s and Bessie’s death certificates show that
they had lived in Boulder City since 1949-50, so presumably they moved there
to be near Robert Smith |
|
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
● the author
previously thought that Bessie’s full name might be Elizabeth, but ► in the
marriage certificate it is Bessie B. Smith (the B possibly standing for
Browning, her mother’s maiden name) ► in the death
certificate it is Bess Smith Wigley ► in the 1900-10
censuses it is Bessie B. Smith, in 1920 Bessie Wigley, in 1930 Bessie S.
Wigley, and in 1940 Bess S. Wigley ► in Chester Greenhalgh’s WW1 Draft Registration Card it is Elizabeth S.
Wigley ● so, for
consistency, the simple name “Bessie” has been used on this site ● nothing more
is known about her |

Roland L. Wigley,
96, of Woods Hole, died peacefully at home among family on September 16. He
was the husband of Nancy (Shave) Wigley. They had been married 64 years. Son of Arthur G. and
Mary E. Wigley, he was born in Blawenburg, NJ and
spent his childhood in Pennington, NJ. He graduated from Pennington Central
High School in 1941, and completed one semester at the University of Maine-Orono before volunteering for service in the U.S. Army
Air Corps. As a second lieutenant, he served as a navigator on a B-29 Flying
Fortress during World War II. After the war, he returned to the University of
Maine-Orono under the G.I.
Bill and received a B.S. degree in Wildlife Conservation in 1949. He then
enrolled as a graduate student at Cornell University, receiving a research
fellowship from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. During the summer of
1949, he served aboard the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s research vessel
ALBATROSS III. While at sea, he had the good fortune of making the
acquaintance of Rachel Carson, author of “Silent Spring”. He received a
doctorate in Vertebrate Zoology from Cornell University in 1953. He began his
career at the Woods Hole Laboratory of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries
(now known as NOAA Fisheries) in 1953 and retired in 1980 as Chief of the
Benthic Dynamics Investigation. Dr.
Wigley had an illustrious and productive career in marine science and
published prolifically with over 50 publications in leading marine science
journals. He also served on the editorial boards of several journals, was a
founder and advisory board member for the publication of identification
manuals: “Marine Flora and Fauna of the Northeastern
United States”, and served on committees of national and international
organizations involved in scientific studies of marine life. He was a member
of American Fisheries Society, American Society of Ichthyologists and
Herpetologists, American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, Society of
Systematic Zoology, Society of Sigma Xi, and a Marine Biological Laboratory
Society Emeritus Member. He participated in
submersible dives aboard the ALVIN and BEN FRANKLIN in collaboration with
researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He also had close
collaborations with researchers at the Marine Biological Laboratory. A large
collection of preserved invertebrate animals, assembled by Dr. Wigley and his associates over his career, was
incorporated into the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the U.S.
National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC. He discovered,
described, and named five crustaceans new to science. He documented the
occurrence of several invertebrate species in the western Atlantic Ocean for
the first time. And, he received the ultimate taxonomic honor
of having five invertebrate species named after him by other researchers. He
received a Special Achievement Award and Silver Medal for his research
accomplishments from the U.S. Department of Commerce. While in Woods Hole,
Roland met and married Nancy Shave, who was working at the Marine Biological
Laboratory, in 1956. He was a devoted husband and loving father to their two
daughters. Some of Roland’s life-long hobbies included fishing, gardening,
music, wood-working, and playing bridge. In addition to his
loving wife Nancy, he is survived by his daughters Cynthia Domack of Clinton, NY and Susan Wigley (and her husband
Jay Burnett) of Falmouth, as well as his nephew Thomas Wigley and his niece
Sharon Gorham, both of Georgia. He was predeceased by his brother Paul Wigley
and sister Jane Wigley. The family wishes to acknowledge the exceptional and
compassionate care provided by Marcey Dehnick, Kerry Burns, Joan Brosnan,
Nancy Perry, Heidi Thatcher, and VNA Cape Cod
Hospice who made Roland’s last few years comfortable and pleasant. Private service and
burial will be held in the Churchyard Cemetery in Woods Hole. Memorial
donations may be made to The 300 Committee Land Trust, 157 Locust Street,
Falmouth, MA 02540. |
