The 28-80 has variable maximum aperature based on where you have it zoomed. at 28mm you will be able to open up to 3.5 but as you zoom that maximum aperature will get smaller such that as some point the best you are going to get out of

I started with the 28-80 on my D70 and coupled with a polarising filter was a pretty good walkabout daytime lens. I broke it, got another of Ebay and it was not as good. I'm now using the 18-70 and it's again good for a general lens.
