Released in the Spring of 1995,
Melon was the first ever "Fan Club" disc done by U2.
It was released with issue #21 of the subscription only
magazine, Propaganda. The CD itself was made up of various
remixes of tracks released throughout the 90s. Some of these
remixes had been released before, where as others such as the
Stay (Underdog Mix) were previously unheard. It quickly
became a much sought out CD among U2 fans.
The Melon CD has been bootlegged by those
realizing that there was money to be made in the limited
quantities in which the CD was pressed. At first it was
easy to tell these fakes, as they often appeared in a jewel
case, where as the original CD was available in a card sleeve
only. However, even copies of the card sleeve have been
bootlegged in recent days.
The Melon CD also lead to a bunch of other
"Bootlegs". These bootlegs are commonly referred
to as "Fruitlegs". These CDs are all unofficial
compilations of remixes under different fruit titles, "Pineapple",
"Mango", etc. These were all labelled as being
for Fan Club Use only even though they DID NOT come from the fan
club or were not approved by U2.
2000 saw the release of a second Fan Club
Only CD - Hasta La Vista Baby. This too was shipped to
subscribers of Propaganda Magazine, and again was released in a
card sleeve.
