Tratto dal secondo romanzo (ma in realtà il primo best-seller) dello scrittore di legal-thriller John Grisham, Il socio ne è un'accattivante trasposizione (sia pure con qualche libertà del regista), girata con il consueto mestiere da Sidney Pollack. Valendosi di un cast di assoluta importanza (oltre ai protagonisti spiccano anche nomi quali Ed Harris e Holly Hunter) il film, anche se piuttosto lungo, non annoia e tiene sempre inchiodato lo spettatore in attesa della soluzione finale. Eccellenti la fotografia di John Seale e la musica di Grusin.
