Brian De Palma ha recentemente diretto un film, Mission to Mars, che rappresenta il punto più buio della sua carriera artistica, ma non si può negare che in passato abbia girato pellicole storiche come questo Scarface, tratto dal famoso omonimo del 1932 di Howard Hawks. In Scarface, Tony Montana è un ex galeotto cubano immigrato negli Stati Uniti. Percorre rapidamente la strada che lo porterà prima a diventare un ricco trafficante di cocaina e, infine, a perdere il controllo della sua vita. Notevoli le interpretazioni del multiforme Al Pacino e della giovane ma determinata Michelle Pfeiffer, senza contare la sceneggiatura di un altro grande del cinema americano, Oliver Stone. Decisiva la fotografia di John A. Alonzo della 'American Society of Cinematographers' per consacrare Scarface tra gli imperdibili classici sulla mafia.
