Inserting Laminar tip wands

 Inserting tip wands

In fact I was shown how to do this by several people from the Icaro factory (see below); and then it took an English guy on top of Laragne in July 2000 (sorry, forgot your name) to show me the real easy way.

  • Insert the spar, and then stand next to the leading edge, holding it against your stomach.
  • Shuffle the sail down towards the tip; arrange the cam-cup system so it's fully open, with the cup facing into the glider:
  • Holding the leading edge at about the point where the spar is inserted with your inboard hand, slide the cam-cup along the spar, bending it rearwards, until the cup slips over the end of the spar.

This technique is almost effortless. Complete the assembly by continuing from * below.

The factory way:

Stand next to trailing edge, facing forwards. Holding the base (thick) end of the spar with your right hand (for right wing), locate it in the leading edge hole and push home (a nice clunk). Next, hold the spar about 1/3-in with your left hand (i.e. inboard, extended and straight) and pull in-line (with right hand) the string attached to the aluminium cam-cup system so that the cup slips over the end of the spar. Then move forward of the LE, which should now rest against your chest (crouched), *hold/pull the carbon fibre against you with your outboard (left) hand to assist in curving the spar, and simultaneously pull the string on the cam-cup inboard (i.e. perpendicular) with your inboard (right) hand across your chest. The cam will get past its point of no return: I often complete the last bit squeezing it shut with my outboard hand. (Swap hands for left wing.)
