La classe Lion rappresenta una delle massime evoluzioni degli incrociatori da battaglia inglesi, superata per tecnologia, stazza e potenza solo dai successivi Tiger ed Hood.
Per dimensioni erano tra le navi più grandi presenti alla battaglia dello Jutland.
Punti di forza erano la grande velocità (ben 28 nodi, solo l'incrociatore da battaglia Seydlitz poteva stargli al pari) e l'armamento poderoso (gli 8 cannoni da 343 mm. ridicolizzavano i calibri da 305 mm. della classe Derfflinger).
Sulla carta erano quanto di meglio la tecnologia navale inglese potesse sviluppare nel 1915.
Sempre sulla carta (vedere il confronto con gli incrociatori da battagia tedeschi Von Der Tann e Derfflinger) erano nettamente superiore agli incrociatori da battaglia tedeschi di Hipper.
Non è un caso che l'Ammiraglio Beatty avesse eletto il Lion quale sua nave ammiraglia (e non ad esempio il Tiger o le super corazzate della squadra di Evan Thomas: Barham, Valiant e Malaya).
Alla prova del fuoco però gli incrociatori da battaglia della classe Queen Mary si dimostrano vulnerabili e non ressero il confronto con gli incrociatori da battaglia tedeschi di Hipper.
Il Queen Mary riuscì a reggere i colpi del Derfflinger dalle 18.23'40" alle 18.26'10" del 31 maggio 1916 (battaglia dello Jutland) dopo di che saltò letteralmente in aria portando con sè nei flutti 1204 uomini e 57 ufficiali.
Il Lion riesce a reggere i colpi del Lutzow per circa dieci minuti dopo di che (alle 15.50 del 31 maggio 1916) "un proiettile da 305 del Lutzow si abbatte sulla torre Q del Lion, quella situata al centro della nave, fra i due camini. La granata colpisce la giuntura della piastra corazzata frontale con quella superiore e sventra la torre, aprendola come una scatoletta di sardine, poi esplode scagliando una pioggia di schegge arroventate sugli inservienti dei pezzi, ferendoli o uccidendoli. Principi di incendio si innescano tutto attorno. I sacchetti che contengono la carica di cordite pronte per essere inserite nelle camere di scoppio dei cannoni vengono lacerati, spargendo l'esplosivo sul pavimento e dentro i montacarichi attraverso il quale i pezzi sono collegati al magazzino sottostante.
Il comandante della torre, maggiore F.J. W. Harvey è stato insignito alla memoria della Victoria Cross, la massima onorificenza militare inglese, per aver ordinato, nonostante fosse già gravemente ferito, di isolare e allagare il magazzino. Il suo intervento fa sì che l'esplosione delle carichie che si trovano attorno ai pezzi non si trasmetta alla cordite che è dabbasso e si trova oramai sommersa dall'acqua.
In questo modo il Lion si salva dalla distruzione.
La torre Q esplode poco dopo che l'acqua ha invaso il deposito munizioni sottostante. Un'altra colonna di fumo si leva sopra la nave, ma il danno rimane contenuto".
Da questa narrazione emerge il tallone d'Achille della classe Lion (ed in generale di tutti gli incrociatori da battaglia inglesi):
collegamento diretto dei depositi di cordite alle torri di fuoco (causò la fine del Queen Mary);
scarsa corazzatura;
eccessivo numero di portelli stagni e quindi insufficiente compartimentazione;
velocità di tiro più lenta rispetto agli incrociatori da battaglia tedeschi;
capacità penetrativa dei propri proiettili nettamente inferiore a quella degli incrociatori da battaglia tedeschi;
distribuzione della corazzatura in modo da renderla assai vulnerabile ai colpi provenienti da grande distanze (es. 20 Km.) e quindi con un elevato angolo di impatto (di questo difetto ne soffrì anche l'Hood che venne disintegrato con pochi colpi dalla Bismarck).
In definitiva gli incrociatori da battaglia della classe Lion erano dei giganti dai piedi di argilla!
FINAL SENTENCE OF SHINANO
The class Lion represents one of the maximum evolutions of the battle cruisers English, old for technology, tonnage and power only from the following Tiger and Hood.
For dimensions they were among the ships greatest presents to the battle of the Jutland.
Points of strength were the great speed (well 28 knots, only the battle cruiser Seydlitz could be him to the peer) and the mighty armament (the 8 guns from 343 mm. ridiculed the calibers from 305 mms. of the class Derfflinger).

The Queen Mary succeeded in having held up the hits of the Derfflinger since 18.23'40" at 18.26'10 o'clock" of May 31 st 1916 (battle of the Jutland) after that it literally jumped in air bringing with itself in the billows 1204 men and 57 officers.
The Lion succeeds in holding up the hits of the Lutzow for about ten minutes after that (to the 15.50 of May 31 st 1916) "a bullet from 305 of the Lutzow gets depressed on the tower Q of the Lion, that situated to the center of the ship, among the two fireplaces. The broom strikes the joint of the plate armored frontal with that superior and disembowels the tower, opening her/it as a scatoletta of sardines, then it explodes casting a rain of red-hot splinters on the attendants of the pieces, hurting them or killing them. Principles of fire are baited around all. The pouches that contain the position of cordite ready to be inserted in the rooms of burst of the guns are lacerated, scattering the explosive on the floor and inside the freight elevators through which the pieces are connected to the underlying store.
The commander of the tower, greater F.J. W. Harvey has been honored to the memory of the Victoria Cross, the maximum honor military English, to have ordered, despite pits already seriously wounded, to isolate and to flood the store. direct connection of the deposits of cordite in the towers of fire (it caused the end of the Queen Mary);
scarce corazzatura;
excessive number of watertight portholes and therefore insufficient compartimentazione;
slower speed of draught in comparison to the German battle cruisers;
ability penetrativa of his/her own bullets clearly inferior to that of the German battle cruisers;
distribution of the corazzatura so that to make a great deal her vulnerability to the hits coming from great distances (es. 20 Kms.) and therefore with an elevated angle of impact (from this defect also suffered the Hood that was disintegrated with few hits by the Bismarck of it).
In conclusion the battle cruisers of the class Lion were of the giants from the clay feet!
