In
dell’arte — completa quella razionale — filosofica
e scientifica — e
quanto in letteratura — è
appassire.
come ci ritroviamo in Ulisse o in Enea. Sbaglierebbe,
varianti, piccoli slittamenti, sottili
mondo e i diritti dell’io.
“sfumata”, più “pensosa”, rispetto all’olio o all’acrilico,
risponde perfettamente agli assunti, formali e contenutistici,
dell’artista.
“I
am the tramp”:
this is the epic metaphor
of Sgubin’s painting Art,
when it is Art, it is
always “outdated” otherwise it would be just phenomenology of the
present, something ephemeral or fashion. In this way it would lose that
connotation typical of art which make it tend to eternity. This
connotation is the ability to communicate over time and space.
In
this sense Sgubin is
a deeply “outdated” artist for at least two reasons: first of all
because he does not give up painting. By painting we mean the technical
ability of drawing, using colour, brushstroke, etc. Second
because he gives his works a strong philosophic and social content. And
this is not easy in a time, such as ours, in which in the name of a
misunderstood “Duchampism” unskilfulness and slovenliness are
offered in the place of the ability of creating and when as art themes
come out the worst or most banal thrusts which could be more interesting
for psychiatry or fashion critic. Sgubin
makes art in its
deepest meaning which is man’s knowledge continuous research of life
and world. Sure enough the knowledge statutes of art are different from
those of philosophy and those of science but they are equally necessary.
The prelogical and emotional knowledge - the one of art - completes the
rational knowledge - philosophical and scientific - and allows the
realization of the aim of knowledge itself which is to act, to choose
and to assume responsibility. This means having an ethically conscious
behaviour and realizing those functions which make man different from
all the other beings. Sgubin
faces the knowledge
of reality in its totality. He does not stop at the appearance nor on
the surface. What appears, just because it does appear, does not need to
be further shown – it is in everybody’s eyes - Instead Sgubin shifts
his glimpse “a little bit further” in order to grasp the depth
beyond the surface. Sgubin
is not interested in normal reality since it is given and therefore it
is not a theme of investigation. Instead he is fascinated by the
non-conventional reality. “Normality ” is just a convention, there
is no reason not to doubt that “abnormality” could be truer or even
better than normality. Therefore the tramp, the theme so dear to the
artist, gains a typical value — a kind of weberian “ideal type” which is a fundamental category for
the father of modern sociology – becoming a symbol of diversity
and of everything that is behind the facade. In this way the
tramp has a positive meaning. They surely are a symptom of social
malaise of a unfair society. However I believe that Sgubin does not
confine himself just to a condemnation but he offers the image of the
tramp as a symbol of a reality as worth as the socially accepted one.
If
it is true that every artist identifies themselves in their subject as
much in art as in literature, it is also true that Sgubin’s
identification with the tramp – even though there is a kind of
lyrical surge towards it – it
is not merely emotional but it lays on a philosophical vision of
great tradition. Life transforms itself. The being goes towards its
death passing through all the decay phases. In a few words “we live to
die” both human beings and things. As we can see in Sgubin’s tramps
and in still-lives. In Sgubin’s absolutely lay vision, life has no
meaning. It goes toward a “shipwreck”, a “checkmate” of
existentialist memory. However out of this vision does not come a
mourning self-pity nor a paralysing pessimism but, on the contrary, a
virile acceptance of reality and the conquest, day by day, of a personal
and strong meaning of life. This is what the tramp does. They do not
care about the ephemeral wealth but they build up their own rules and
behaviours. Just like the flowers that after their sweet-smelling beauty
accept their withering. If
after Flaubert we can say «Madame Bovary c’est moi», with
Sgubin we can say «I am the tramp».
To strengthen tramp’s typical value, Sgubin – who, by the way,
obtains his subjects from the direct and real observation in the
stations and on the streets – does not create identifying elements (faces
are always covered or they turn away) because his idea does not tend to
the representation of the single but to make a metaphor of everyone.
From time to time the things of the tramp – clothes, bags and junks
– are drawn in the foreground with their lively colours to underline
the positive aspect of this “tramphood”. After all what Sgubin’s
painting tells us is a great epic poem with which the artist lets us
find a part of ourselves just as we can do with Ulysses or Enea.
They
would be wrong those
who wuold see in Sgubin’s art just the aspect of social condemnation.
This aspect is surely present but it is not the main one as the tramp
does not shout, complain nor fight. Their stillness and silence are a
stronger call for recognition of their being and for a recall to the
genuineness of living. Here it cannot but come to mind Munch’s work
and thought. If
art with an high
percentage of thought appears to be “outdated” in a time
where man (the artist)
seems to have given up introspection for comfortably and quickly
“sliding” over things and problems, even more “outdated” could
appear Sgubin’s strong will and ability of being a painter. Sgubin’s
thought finds its strength in the technical choices he makes. All of
those choices are bounded to the best painting tradition and at
the same time they are well aware of the most recent developments
of art. Sgubin surpasses the sterile dichotomy between figurative and
abstract, realism and conceptual, reaching a complex painting in which
all of those elements converge. The representation of a tramp or of a
flower is realistic. However if we look at some parts of the picture we
can perceive abstract shapes, even minimal, which witness the ability of
moving freely over all the territories of painting, avoiding every form
of eclecticism though gaining a very personal style.
Let’s
try to spot its main
elements. First of all repetitiveness. For many artists we say that
“they make always the same picture”. Let’s think of Morandi,
Fontana and Castellani: these artists of the “different repetition”
have a very peculiar charm because in the obsession of subject’s
reiteration – with all of its variations, its tiny shifting and smooth
differentiation - we better understand the depth of the research, the
persistence for perfection and the strong belief in their creed and
craft. In
the composition of the space Sgubin chooses the bidimensionality. He
refuses the prospective illusoriness of realistic typology and he
organizes the canvas into two levels: the subject (tramp or still-life)
and the background, almost always with two background-paintings and
sometimes with three. In this way the subject that stands in the
foreground assumes its own being by the juxtaposition and the comparison
with the background and the lateral images (escalators, windows, doors)
in order to stress the duality of the world and the rights of the ego.
Everything is always made with soft shades. There is no darkness but a
kind of removal of light. It is a completely interior light which
perfectly shows the artist feelings. It must be noted Sgubin’s ability
in using the palette evoking the great venetian colour tradition. At a
first sight Sgubin’s works seem to be playing on bitonality of
light and dark. This effect is willingly created as much for its
spiritual contents as for the material making of the painting. However
those shades are the result of a complete and multiple use of the whole
chromatic range. The use of the tempera itself – a more hinted and
thoughtful technique compared to oil or acrylic - perfectly responds to
the artist’s formal assumptions and assumptions of content.
Also
the contrasts between vertical and horizontal lines of the compositions,
together with the diagonal ones, never assume a tone of dialectic nor
violent clash but it reaches a balance of quiet. However this is a kind
of “quiet” that is not “stillness” but virile and solitary
acceptation of life. This acceptation, as the scream of silence, puts in
the foreground the drama and the ethical necessity of its recognition
not for an impossible happiness but at least for a life which is worth
living just with self-consciousness and the consciousness of the world. Giorgio Bonomi |
