ottavio sgubin

Ottavio Sgubin was born in Aquileia (Udine) on 22 december 1940. He attended the Institute of Art in Trieste and even though very young, he found his highly personal expressive language. In the first years of the ’60 Sgubin becomes the “painter of facades”, of churches and of wide surfaces which, as they derange every prospective rule of symmetry and balance, they stress and dismantle the objective datum of the expressionistic realism in which the sensible representation is both a transfiguration and a subjective intervention. Looking back to Sgubin’s first works we already find some fundamental elements both thematic and symbolic which will remain constant throughout his artistic production: from the obsessive and difficult colour research - the predilection for those both harsh and soft shades of pink of the venetian tradition - to the instinctive though conscious invention of a pictorial interpretation able to penetrate reality and at the same time to spot its most mutable and uncertain relativism. From the marked geometry of the forms the research focuses on the study of colour and light and ends up with reaching a vibrant use of the light colours. Evanescent figures and landscapes dissolve every contrast and release poetics of allusions, references and analogies. Art represents a completely interior reality and becomes immediate transcription of pure perceptions filtered by an active sensitivity that disassembles images reducing them to a spare and hermetic essentiality.

While going through different thematic periods Sgubin worked out expressive codes and tools which develop and succeed one another following a gradual investigation of contents and intuitions. After all they are nothing but “occasions”- and the reference to Montale is not a case - or completely interiorized  “reasons” in which the objective referent is reduced to an incitation for a work of introspection. Loneliness, surrender, silent resignation or animal attachment to life: this is what emerges from the works dedicated to the Earthquake of 76. The tension is stressed up to the silence of the Wall of the ’80 - this is the phase in which the figure is materially and sybolically pressed and isolated by a flat and uniform wall that represents the oppressive and inexorable power of indifference. With the tribute to Tono, Sgubin relives some themes of the artist Zancanaro, whom he feels very close in artistic sensibility. Those themes become one more time “occasions” for making comparisons and deeper investigations. It is maybe from the meeting with Tono’s world, with its wanderers and  its squares that Sgubin falls in love with the figure of the tramp, a shape which initially remains wrapped around itself  as a symbol of desperate introversion. Rigid and worn out draping petrify this figure to a complete stillness with no opening to the world. Slowly the tramp becomes the main character of Sgubin’s canvases. Their monumental presence plunges into the greyness and shadows of the metropolis, hides on their sidewalks and in their ruins. The tragicalness of those characters shines out of the rigid folds of their clothes, form the stillness of their postures, from their statesque gait. However Sgubin’s research is never news report nor sociological inquiry. The sensibility of the artist turns reality into images and icons and holds the power of translating a world of impressions and states of mind into figures. From Sgubin’s tramps comes out the delirious melancholy of surrender and pain with a completely human tragedy.

In 1992, beside tramps, Sgubin begins working on still-lives, objects full of a yearning nostalgia: dolls, shells and peculiar shapes which are worn out and twisted as they were almost an organic fermentation on shades of grey and brown with hints of fantastic light. Here Sgubin’s visionary world moves inside an existential precariousness as a world of great expressive power full of a crawling symbolic meaning.
