i have to second what sergeant and the others already said about it and add that it's the only way to get exactly the negative look you want. but i won't give up on ilford though. i'd miss that wonderful ilford fp4

but if you are using a non-hardening fixer, take a look at the ilford film washing sequence as another option, too. you'll waste less water and still get archival negatives. the details are in any ilford film datasheet in the 'wash'
kodak double-x bw negative processing film stocks and processing
i am thinking in shooting (and developing) w/ double-x kodak negative b&w. my question regards developing, would a high-contrast developer (in this case kodak d-19 - maybe 5-6min at 24c) and a ilford hardner/fixer do? or this film also

i have developed double x before, execept in d-76, with good results. the d-19 will give more contrast then d-76. the ilford fixer should work just fine and there is no remjet backing on the film. i'm not sure about the developing time

it was ilford hp5. i did fix longer than usual, though. around 5 minutes. and i am using ilford rapid fixer. as it happened, it was the cheapest, i just did another roll of ilford, cut down on the fixer time, and all seems well

s5hiara - i've seen that 5 min. rest recommendation too, but agree that it's unecessary. i've been washing with a slightly extended version of ilford method for years (5, 10, 20, 30), just to be on the safe side, i guess. a quick
