Shane's adventure with the roller coaster!

from Top Of The Pops, August 2000

U.S. OF AAARGH!

TOTP: Did you act like crazy tourists in the U.S. of America?

SHANE: We went to Disney World and I did the dodgiest thing ever. I hate roller coasters. Hate them! But there was this thing called the Aerosmith Rock’n’Roller Coaster – supposedly one of the fastest roller coaster ever. The other lads had been on it the day before when I was at my sister’s wedding, so they knew exactly what it was. But they told me it was a theme ride through Aerosmith concert footage. I didn’t have a clue! I sat in the seat next to Nicky and just as I realised Nicky said: ‘Sorry, Shane!’ I started shrieking, I can tell you! It was 0-60 in two seconds – like a fighter jet. I was shouting every bad name under the sun. It was brilliant though – I went on it another four times!

Nicky about the Swear It Again video

Smash Hits (August 9, 2000)

"Have you seen that bit where I flick Shane's ear in the Swear It Again video? The director called me to one side and said: "When we start, I want you to flick Shane's ear so I can catch his reaction." We had only one go at it. You can probably see us all laughing as I go to do it. It was quite funny 'cos he could have turned round and said anything!!!"

.... fortunately for us... he didn't!!! :)

How we took poor Shane for a ride
We tricked him over rollercoaster thriller

Hi Nicky here,

To borrow the title of our co-manager Ronan Keating's brilliant new single, "Life Is A Rollercoaster" for us right now. Literally.

We've been enjoying all the fun of the rides and amusements in Disneyworld here in Orlando, Florida.
Disneyworld is just fantastic and it brings out the child in everyone..even the parents who are out here with their kids. There are some rides that send chills down your spine - but none of us chickened out of them.

Shane isn't mad into the rides, so we played a mean trick on him when he joined us after his trip home to Sligo for his sister's wedding.
The day before Shane arrived back, a guy from Disney brought us around Disneyworld and it was a brilliant experience. We were able to skip all the queues and go free on all the rides.
There's a new one here called The Rock 'n' Roller, which goes from 0 to 60 in two seconds! It's really stomach churning stuff.
We tried it out the first day and it was a really exhilarating experience.
The following day we were back again, but we knew that Shane would turn it down if he knew what was involved. So we told him it was a tour. The ride actually says Aerosmith on the outside and it plays rock 'n' roll music when you get on it. He got into the rollercoaster beside me and put the security strap over his head. Then he said to me, "We're getting very buckled up for just a virtual reality ride." It was then that I had to break the shock news to him. "Shane," I said, "this is like a mega rollercoaster ride."
He looked totally freaked out, but it was too late. We shot off from 0 to 60 at the blink of an eyelid.
When we stopped, Shane had a smile from ear to ear. He absolutely loved it and got straight back on again! From then on, there was no stopping him. He joined us on all the daredevil rides, including Space Mountain and a new one called House Of Terror. It's like a hotel; you get into an elevator and it brings you up, floor by floor, and then drops you to the ground. Shane wasn't a big fan of that one.

ARE WESTLIFE CRIMINALS?

Top Of The Pops (issue 63) May 2000

This is one of the question the guys were asked in an interview for TOTP . The main question of the whole article is "Are Westlife Criminals?"

The fashion police are on patrol. Which Westlifer is most likely to be arrested for indecent clothes sense and slung in the back of the van?

KIAN: Shane! He can wear the silliest of things. Do you remember Tenerife? We all met up by the pool in our shorts and flip-flops and then Shane appeared: baseball cap, sunglasses, white vest, green summery shirt, swim shorts, bum bag...

BRYAN: Big white socks and black Nike trainers...

SHANE: No! Don’t remind me of that!

KIAN: we said, ‘Where are you going Shane?’ And he was all (puts on gormless voice), ‘What? What?’ He looked like such a tourist.

MARK: Shane’s not bad overall but that day he looked terrible.

SHANE: It’s a fair cop!

... why wasn't I there to see that amazing Irish tourist? :)

THE SCARIEST FANS EXPERIENCE

l&k: What’s been your scariest ever fan experience?

SHANE: A girl pulled my tracksuit bottoms off once! I was just standing there in my boxer shorts in the middle of Dublin! Luckily I was wearing nice Calvin Kleins! Ha ha!
