Live & Kicking (January, 2000)

Bryan...

All night parties with A1, going out with Lene Aqua and trying to get home for corrie! Welcome to Bryan 'life's world...

When did you last stay up all night?

It was in Sweden recently. We did a big show and then had a massive party in one of our rooms. There was us, Precious and A1 and we had a mad time - we stayed up all night and totally wrecked the room!

Is it weird having your love life scrutinised by the papers?

It is a bit weird actually! Even when I don't meet people, it appears in the papers that I have. I'm always reading about these girls I'm supposed to be going out with, who I've never even met! Mind you, when I do go out with people I'll never deny it. I owe it to the fans to be honest, they buy our records so why should I lie to them about if I'm going out with anyone or not? I don't really mind my love life being talked about - it's part and parcel of the job isn't it?

If one of Westlife suddenly left, what would happen?

We'd just carry on. It would be hard 'cause each member brings their own special personality to the band. I can't imagine that ever happening.

Will you get married and have kids in the near future?

(Looks shocked!) I'll have to wait util the band's finished or a good few years down the line when the band's more established that's for sure. I'd like to have a wife and kids by the time I'm 30 though. At the moment I haven't time for a girlfriend never mind a wife!

Is that why you and Lene Aqua split up?

Well yeah, me and Lene lasted for about one month and a half. We were quite serious about each other, but we just never got the time to meet, so we finished it. We're still friends though.

What one thing are you most sensitive about?

My weight! I have to always watch what I eat. If I ate like I did when I was younger I'd balloon again. I used to get lots of hassle about my size when I was at school which upset me. The lads give me a bit of stick about it.

How did you learn about the birds and the bees?

From other kids at school! You know how it is, you just pick up bits of information by listening to what everyone else is whispering about!

When was the last time you were scared?

There was a plane crash recently when a plane took from New York and one of my friends was talking off from there at the same time. Fortunately she wasn't on that plane, but I was really scared in case she was.

What programme do you hate to miss?

I never miss Friends. When I'm not at home my sister tapes it every week for me then, when I come home, I watch seven or eight in a row! I used to always try and watch Coronation Street, but I've given up trying to keep up with it 'cause I'm away so much.

Would you ever have plastic surgery?

Never! I'm happy with what I've got. This is what God gave me and I wouldn't try and change it. What about when I go all saggy and old? Nah, I'm not bothered, maybe I'll start using Oil Of Olay!

REVEAL THE ITEMS YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT:

My mobile phone

It's my contact to the outsideworld and I'd be completely lost without it. It's particulary good 'cause we don't have to pay for ours phone calls! A v. generous phone company gave us all free phones and call-time. How cool is that!

A family picture

It's hard to not get homesick 'cause we're away from Ireland so much of the time. I'm not complaining because it's part of the job but my family are very important to me, so I always keep a photo of them with me.

My clothes

I love being able to dress up for my job, especially when we get loads of posh gear. Our stylist, Kenny, gets really nice thing for us to wear. The clothes we used to wear before the group took off are horrible! Our old pictures are so embarrassing, you wouldn't catch mein gear like that now!

My wallet

All of my money is in it and so I wouldn't be able to buy anything if I didn't have it. I love shopping and so my wallet always comes in v. handy!

My CD player

Music is so important to all of us so we couldn't be without our CD players which we take everywhere. We always play music when we're travelling to find out what's going on. We like to check out the competition!

Smash Hits (March 8, 2000)

Lovelife!

Bryan McFadden, you're talking Smash Hits on a hot date. Details please...

What did you wear?

Whatever's clea! No, actually I've just bought a new suit. It was hand-made by an Irish designer. It's black with a black shirt and the bottoms are really baggy so I can wear white runners underneath. It looks really cool 'cos you only just see the top of the trainers. I look a bit like a gangster when I wear it, but I like that! As for underwear, I'd probably wear a pair of Calvins or my lucky boxer shorts. They're long, red and they have cartoon characters on them!

How long would you spend getting ready?

Probably the whole day. I'm dedicated.

What should I wear?

Whatever you want because Iif I wanted to go on a date with you, you'd look beautiful in anything. I don't like girls wearing tarty clothes like skitrs and boots. I prefer them in jeans, I don't mind if a girl wears a skirt, but I think they look best when when they don't have to try. I like girls who don't have to wear make-up. I hate it when a girl wears a low-cut top, a little skirt and loads of make-up. It's just not them, it's not the real person. And I do get jealous if I walk down the street with a girl and every man stares at her.

Would you pick me up?

Of course. I haven't got a car so I'd borrow my best friend's. He drives a big Merc so I'd go for that.

What would we do?

I'd pick you up in the afternoon and we'd go to the zoo first. Then we'd go to the cinema, then for dinner and then for a walk along the beach. We'll see whatever you want at the cinema and then we'll eat whatever you want. If you like Italian, we'll have Italian, if you like Japanese, we'll have Japanese. I don't like Champagne, but you can have it if you want.I'd also like to introduce you to my nan 'cos you'd love her. She tells the best stories. But that might be a bit full-on for a first date!

Who pick up the bill?

I do, definitely. No question. If you wanted to pay half, I'd probably say you could pay for the cinema, but I'd sneak off and pay for it myself when you weren't looking!

What time did I get home?

Depends how the date goes. If it's good, you'll probably get home at 8am the next morning. (Blushing) I don't mean you'd stay at mine, we'd just be partying all night. We could go to a club after the beach.

Do I get a goodnight kiss?

If you let me. If it happens it happens. I wouldn't deliberately try to kiss you.

Who'd be your ideal date?

I'd much rather go out with someone who's not famous. I think Jennifer Love Hewitt and Catherine Zeta Jones are very good-looking, but I wouldn't want to go on a date with them. I prefer to get to know someone before I go on a date with them. My dream date would be someone who makes me laugh, someone who makes me happy and someone I can share everything with.

Smash Hits (May 3, 2000)

My 5.000.000 lovers

Boyband Romeo caught at it again!

It's official! Westlife's Bryan McFadden has now dated every single female popstar on the planet. A proud Mrs McFadden told us...

"Whatever the papers say, I haven't been on many dates - that's the truth. Last time I went on a date was with Kerry, before Christmas. We went to the cinema, then we went shopping the next day. That was when someone took a photo of us and it got into the  papers.

I haven't been on a date with her since because I haven't had time, but also because of the papers. They built it up and said that we were in love after two days which was ridiculous. It's a pity because she's a lovely girl.

It's ridiculous the papers have linked me with so many people. They said I was going out with Jamie Hepburn, but I was with her and her boyfriend, then they said I was supposed to be getting married to KerryAnn, which was so stupid - she used to babysit me when I was a kid. We were introduced at the Pepsi Chart and the next day it was in the papers that I was going out with her. The worst thing was that I was actually going out with somebody at the time - I have had a couple of girlfriends since I've been in Westlife. Then there was something about me and Hannah 7 and that was just stupid 'cos I've been friend with her and Bradley for ages. Hannah and Hannah's two flatmates and again, it was in the papers the next day.

I admit that I did on a date with Kerry, but I wasn't going out with her properly, just two dates. There have been so many stories and none of them has been true. I did go on a date with Kerry and I did see Lene from Aqua for a little while, but it gets really, really annoying when the papers are going on about you being in love when it's not true.

People think I'm the kind of bloke who tries it on with every girl, and that makes me feel awful. No girl will want to go on a date with me now because she knows that as soon as we go out it will be in the papers. You can't even have a casual fling. I've been friend with Atomic Kitten, S Club 7 and Steps for a long time and we can't go out for a drink, even in a group because it will be in the papers.

There have been lots of stories about Westlife, but I probably get it the worst. There was that story that every time I see a McDonald's I have to go in and eat five burgers and there was a story that I want to a nightclub and got in a fight, just so much stupid stuff. It seems anything I do ends up on the front page. It's just one of the things that comes with the business so I've just got to deal with it.

TV Hits (May, 2000)

Bag Of Tricks!

It's time for Bryan Westlife to delve into our wondrous, magic back of tricks...

Last month Adam form Hollyoaks asked...

Where was the Shakespeare play Romeo and Juliet set?

Ooooh, I haven't got a clue and I've just seen Shakespeare in love too. Oh I'm gonna sound a right ditz aren't I? Erm, was it Stratford upon Avon? (Soz Bry, it was actually Verona in Italy).

When was the last really good night out you had?

Last time we were back in Ireland - myself, Nicky, Kian and Mark went to this pub near Dublin. We started at 3pm and went on 'til 4 or 5am. About 30 of our friends turned up. We ended up going to a club with the Irish football team. It was amazing!

Are you afraid of flying?

No, I love flying. If I had wings I would fly myself! I guess it's a good thing I like flying so much, seeing as I spend half of my life on a plane these days...

What's been your biggest mobile bill ever?

We have free phones now and my bill works out about £3000 a month! Before that when I was paying it myself it was about £1,500. Thankfully, the record company pays the bills now. It's still crazy, though!

What was the last film you saw at the movies?

It was The Matrix with Keanu Reeves. I loved it. It's one of those films that you have to be clued into from the very start.

What moisturiser do you use?

I don't really have anything that I use all the time. I'm supposed to use thi medical stuff 'cos my skin gets very dry. I guess though, that I would use Clinique if anything the most. I bought a big bottle of duty free months ago and it's the only one that I have.

What's your fave smell?

The smell of cookies baking or the smell of my mum baking bread 'cos it reminds me of home. I love the smell of the countryside as well!

What was the last item of clothing you bought?

I've just bought some  Homer Simpson socks. I have them with me actually. You can have them if you want 'cos I haven't worn them yet (popstar socks - yes pleas!). I love the simpson. I got a pair of Simpsons boxer shorts off some fans in Paris the other day, which was really nice.

Do you keep a diary?

No, I don't have time and I'm also to lazy, heh-heh!

Are you a tidy person?

No, not really, but I have been packing my suitcase really neatly lately. My room is always a mess, though. I always just throw all my clothes off when I get into bed and then worry about folding them up in the morning.

Do you play any instruments?

Yup - piano, guitar, keyboards and I used to play the trumpet. I play a little bit of drums as well. The only thing that I've ever had lessons in was the trumpet, and that's the one that I can play the least - the others, I just picked up myself. I can't read music but I have a good ear for it.

Who's your fave Steps girl?

Oh, Clair definitely! We know Steps quite well and are always running into them. I fancy her as well (with a cheeky grin)!

Have you ever done any gardening?

No, it's far too boring. I used to mow the lawns at home but only 'cos I had to. My dad used to make me di it as punishment. If I ever did something bad at school he would say to me, "Right, you're doing the lawns today". We've got a big lawn at home, too!

What's the best concert that you've ever been to?

The Backstreet Boys on their last tour and it was just astounding! We actually supported them on the tour before that in Dublin and that was just amazing as well...

OK Bryan, a quezzie for next month's star please...

Right, following on from my last answer - what was Backstreet Boys first single called?

Live & Kicking Westlife Special (June 2000)

Heart to heart with

Bryan

Thanks a lot Jacqueline for letting me use your transcription of this wonderful interview!

What would you most like people to know about you?

"I love songwriting. I've already written seven songs for the next album. Our first CD featured a lot of other people's songs, but for the next one we're gonna have more say in it."

How would your mum and dad describe you?

"Always on the move, always doing something. There's no way I can just sit and do nothing. But these days I make the most of relaxing."

What is your earliest childhood memory?

"I'll never forget the first time I came to England. I was about six, I had a little red raincoat, red wellies and a hat!"

Are you a good judge of character?

"Yeah, I know straight away when people are fake and just want to know me because i'm in Westlife. When you look into someone's eyes you know whether their genuine, especially girls. You can tell they're not interested in whar you're saying, and they're just thinking, "My God i'm sat with someone out of Westlife!"

Do you meet a lot of people like that, then?

"Oh yeah, so many. I just say "I've got to go now!". I'd never snog a girl who treated me like that."

How romantic would you say you were?

"Very romantic. People probably think i'm the kind of guy that goes out with loads of girls, 'cause I was in the papers eight times in three months and only one of them was true! The funniest was when they said I was going out with Hannah from S Club. I was going round her house to her flatmate who i've been friends with for ages."

What sort of romantic things do you like to do?

"What makes me happy is foing things that make the girl smile. I love it. I was seeing a girl who was really into 70s music so I got as many 70s albums as I could for her birthday. Some guys would buy her flowers or jewellert, but I knew there was this band she really lved, so I knew it would make her really happy."

Ever been in love?

"Ooh yes!"

How many times then?

"Once. I got my heart broken. She's one of the nicest people i've ever met. but because of what i'm doing, it was hard to carry on the relationship."

Is it weird that so many girls fancy you?

"I don't think they fancy me - it was only when I got into this band that they started paying attention to me. All of us lads know we're not models or anything,we're just boys in a band."

What do you look at first in the mirror?

"It's usually my hair. And I always check to see if my chin is getting fatter!"

What are your best and worst features?

"My weight is my worst attribute, it goes up and down so much. One week i'll be OK and be getting away with it, and the next i'm overweight again."

Who was the last person you hugged?

"I hug people I work with every day, but the last person I gave a proper hug too was my mum 'cause she was going into hospital."

What makes you smile?

"Like I said before, what makes me smile is making people happy. That's why I love being in the band so much - because I get to see all the girls smile!"

What TV show makes you laugh?

"I really like watching Friends. When Friends in on it always really cheers me up."

When was the last time you bawled your eyes out?

"A while ago when my mum's best friend died of cancer. I was close to her because we used to go on holiday together. I'm quite emotional and cry easily. In America recently we met these guys from Dublin and I had a tear in my eye talking about home."

When and how did you first learn about the birds and the bees?

"I don't think that there was just one time or just one day. I think I picked it up gradually as I went along. My friends were all older then me so they probably told me."

Describe your bedroom...

"I don't really have a bedroom anymore, but my mum tries to keep a room free for me. She puts all my mail on the bed - it's covered with letters when I get back. I've still got my Superman duvet cover on my bed though!"

What's your most treasured posession?

"There are two things actually - my dad gave me a peice of rock that was blessed by a bishop and is meant to protect me. Then i've got a prayer book which my auntie gave me when I got into this band."

What's been the best moment of your life so far, Bryan?

"The day I got into this band. It was weird 'cause at the audition they picked me and Nicky on a trial basis and were gonna choose between us. But in the end they decided to keep both and get rid of one of the others!"

How did you celebrate that night?

"We'd made such good friends with Michael who was let go from the band, we just sat and tried to cheer the poor fella up."

Is there anything in life you that you worry about?

"I worry about my family, especially their health. And I worry about the band not working out well."

When did you last lose your temper?

"Recently, I was tired and stressed at work and I lost it over something really stupid. But I never really shout. I hate confrontations and arugments."

How tough are you?

"I don't like fighting at all, but I can defend myself."

Have you ever been in a proper fist fight?

"At school. Someone pushed my sister so I stuck up for her."

Are you scared about having a baby?

"No, i'm really excited about marriage and having babies. But first, I need a few days off to meet the right person to do it with!"

Would you say that fame has ever been a burden to you?

"Yeah, of course it has. When you're tired and you've got time off and people still expect you to be a pop star. Even if you say, "Look i'm tired",they might accuse you of being arragont."

How important is money to you?

"Money has never been important, but now i've got some it's a comfort. Would I still be in the band if I only got £50 a week from it? Yeah, of course."

What do you most admire about Kian?

"Umm...his strengh. If anything's going wrong, he sticks with it til it's right."

And what do you least admire about him?

"His temper - he loses his temper very quickly."

This interview has been...

"The second best experience of my life. And I can't be telling you exactly what the best was!"

Smash Hits (July 26, 2000)

"I got hassled for being chubby"

He was the subject of playground taunts and bullies, Bryan Westlife opens his heart about his difficult teenage years...

What was the hardest thing about growing up?

I didn't really enjoy growing up. I was fat, so I was a lot different to how I am now. I was quieter. Everyone was abousive 'cos of my weight and I didn't have many friends. People didn't accept me 'cos I was fat and I used to sing and dance.

Did the other kids laught at you for dancing?

Yeah. I got called names like "dancer boy" and kids always said I was gay. I went to an all-boys' school and I was the only guy there who was into dancing, which was seen as a feminine thing. But I loved it so I didn't care.

What was you interested in?

Singing, music, and I spent a lot of time playing footy and hanging out with my best friend Eddie. But I got hassled there too for being chubby.

Where you lucky with girls?

Not at all. I didn't kiss a girl 'till I was 17. It was behind the cinema in Dublin. I'll never forget it.

How confident were you?

Not very. In my last year of school people said I was the ugliest guy in the world and I'd never get a girlfriend. One day a guy walked up to me with his girlfriend and said, "Look at him, would you ever go out with him?". When that happened I thought, "Right, I'm going to do something about this." I played more football, didn't eat as many sweets and worked at loosing weight. And when I did people started to take me seriously.

What was life when you went to Stage School?

Great, 'cos the people there accepted me. I made people laugh, so I made a lot of good friends.

How did you cope with being bullied?

I just did. I didn't sit down and say, "What am I going to do?" I just carried on. I focused on singing, taught myself guitar and piano and listened to music. It's not like it was a horrible thing that one person said. Everyone said it so I learned to laugh it off.

What advice would you give to people who are bullied?

If anybody slags you, ignore them. Usually they have their owns problems and it's just their way of making themselves feel better. Focus on what you want to do and if you have a dream don't let anyone tell you you can't do it, you can. I always said I wanted to be a famous singer and everyone said, "No way, look at the state of you."
