Turkish people suspect that the opposition
against Turkey’s eventual EU membership is based on the fact that the
majority of them are Muslims. It is a general opinion in Turkey that Europeans
have religious prejudices.
That is why it was especially unfortunate
that the Catholic Church’s most senior theologian Cardinal Ratzinger
rejected, in an interview, Turkey’s membership only because „Turkey is in
permanent contrast to Europe“. The EU is an economic - political union which
is not threatened by Islam. Olli Rehn’s task will not be facilitated when an
objective debate on Turkey’s qualifications is being injured by Vatican’s
monopolistic attitude.
