LANGUAGE AND ADVERTISING

Advertising is a form of promotion that is used to increase the sales of goods and services by making them known to the public. Nowadays advertising is a highly refined and specialised industry, a fundamental feature of modern marketing. Advertising reaches people through the media. The most popular ones are: television, radio, press, posters, billboards and electric signs. In selecting the medium or combination of media, the advertiser will consider the budget of money to be spent on a given campaign; the number and the type of costumers the product or service is aimed to.

The most difficult task for the advertiser is to make sure that consumers remember the message of his adverts. The different types of advertising include:

  1. informative advertising: it is designed to give information in the public interest;
  2. competitive advertising: it encourages consumers to buy a certain brand of product rather than that of any other competitor;
  3. persuasive advertising: it aims at creating in the potential customer the desire to buy a product.

Some effective devices adopted by advertisers in order to make their adverts memorable and persuasive are:

  1. visual images: they serve to appeal to consumers' emotions and desires;
  2. slogans: intriguing and witty "puns" associated with a certain product.
