ABSTRACT: Changes in the presence of diseases and pests, especially
insects,
have
been noticed in nursery stock in Belgium, due to the increasing use of
greenhouses. One of the insects beginning to show invasion is the
carnation leaf roller, Cacoecimorpha pronubana, attacking a variety of
plants, mainly woody ornamental species. Remarkably, these small pests are
only found in protected cultivation areas; in approximately 20% of
nurseries the small moth is found in the greenhouses. Up to the present,
the Provincial Centre for Agriculture and Horticulture of Rumbeke-Beitem
(Belgium) has recorded no damage in the open air. As host plants, the
larvae of Cacoecimorpha pronubana prefer plants with tough leaves
remaining green during the winter. The leaves of those plants are spun
together like a kind of cocoon in which the larvae hide themselves. The
damage caused in this way can accumulate very fast and remains visible,
often for weeks and sometimes even months. During the life-cycle of the
pest, it is assumed that a few generations are completed per year. The
moths can be seen from early May until October. The insect hibernates in
the larval stage. The control of this insect with insecticides is often
problematic as the larvae encapsulate themselves in cocoons of silk and
leaves.

ABSTRACT: Among studies carried out since blueberry introduction in western
Andalusia, Spain, a survey was carried out to identify the Lepidoptera
species associated with this crop. Plants of five blueberry southern
highbush cultivars were sampled on plots of 10X10 m. Fourteen species
belonging to 8 Lepidoptera families were collected. Most of them were non
-outbreak pests which must have incorporated blueberry into their diets
recently. Because of their biological characteristics, frequency,
population dynamics and type of damage, the tortricids Cacoecimorpha
pronubana and Lobesia botrana, the pyralid Criptobables gnidiella
[Cryptoblabes gnidiella] and the noctuids Spodoptera littoralis and
Acronicta auricoma are discussed as the Lepidoptera species which may
require monitoring and/or some form of control.

ABSTRACT: This study describes the suite of reverse gaits available to
larvae
of
Pleuroptya ruralis, Cacoecimorpha pronubana, Cucullia verbasci and Tyria
jacobaea, from reverse walking (the kinematic inverse of normal forward
walking), through to reverse galloping (in which all the legs save the
claspers are wrenched free of the ground with each step) to recoil-and
-roll, a unique form of locomotion in which the insect free-wheels
backwards at high speed. These reverse forms of locomotion are produced
primarily in response to threat, involve bilateral activation of the
intersegmental muscles and are relatively simple in terms of neural
control. The ecological roles of high-speed locomotion are considered in
the light of potential predators and the normal habitat and terrain.

ABSTRACT: The major obstacle for the export of cut flowers from Italy to
the
principal European markets (Germany, Austria and Scandinavian countries)
is determined by the presence of insect pests on the products. The
principal insect pests are the tortricids Cacoecimorpha pronubana and
Epichoristodes acerbella, and the agromyzid Liriomyza trifolii. The need
for a phytosanitation certification for certain cut flowers by the customs
regulations of different countries is discussed. Experimental research on
the use of direct ionizing radiation (radiodisinfestation) to control
insect pests on cut flowers has given very promising results, and the
advantages for exportation of using this technique are described.

ABSTRACT: The effects were studied of 4 neem extracts (Sukrina New,
Rakshak,
Margosan

development of Cydia pomonella and of one extract (Sukrina New) on
Cacoecimorpha pronubana. The studies were carried out in the laboratory at
24°C, LD 16:8 and 70% RH. Cydia pomonella was more susceptible to the
action of Sukrina New than Cacoecimorpha pronubana. No effects on feeding
behaviour, mortality or the duration of development were detected in the
latter species. All the extracts altered the feeding behaviour of Cydia
pomonella, causing larvae not to penetrate the diet medium, but only
Azatin exhibited a repellent or antifeedant effect. Margosan-O and Rakshak
had the greatest effect on larvae of C. pomonella, causing 100% mortality
at concn of 0.0625 and 0.025%, resp. Larvae which fed on neem extracts
were smaller and had a longer development time than untreated larvae.

ABSTRACT: The effectiveness of using sex pheromones to monitor
Epichoristodes
acerbella and Cacoecimorpha pronubana on carnation was evaluated in
greenhouses in Italy in 1982-86. For E. acerbella, the pheromone blend
tested was a mixture of purified (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate, (Z)-9
-tetradecenyl acetate, (Z)-9-tetradecen-1-ol, (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-ol and
tetradecyl acetate in the relative molar ratio of 74.6:10.0:5.1:5.1:5.2,
resp. The components of C. pronubana pheromone were (Z)-11-tetradecenyl
acetate (75%), (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-ol (20%) and (E)-11-tetradecenyl
acetate (5%). Pheromones of each species were particularly effective for
monitoring adults at doses of 25 µl/trap in PVC vials at a trap density of
about 1/800 m2. Preliminary studies showed that sex pheromones were only
effective for controlling E. acerbella by the mating disruption technique
if there was a low density of the pest (0.005 females/m2). The pheromone
was distributed at a dose of 1 µl/m2 and different numbers of E. acerbella
were then released. Very satisfactory results were obtained in the control
of C. pronubana on roses by use of the mass-trapping technique. The traps
were placed one per plant, and each trap was baited with 25 µl of the
pheromone blend.

ABSTRACT: Experiments were conducted to determine the origin of dialkyl
disulfides
found in the larval frass of Acrolepiopsis assectella which enabled the
specialist parasitoid Diadromus pulchellus to find its host. These
kairomones were not specific and were also found in the frass of the
generalist tortricid pest Cacoecimorpha pronubana fed a leek-based diet.
They were emitted only after the frass emerged from the gut. The addition
of antibiotics to the diet prevented bacterial development and suppressed
disulfide emission. When grown in the presence of sulfur amino acids,
which are precursors of sulfur volatiles, some bacteria metabolised the
kairomones. The production of volatile kairomones, responsible for host
-parasitoid relationships, depended on the presence of additional
organisms, i.e., bacteria, and not on enzymes arising from the plant or
phytophage.

ABSTRACT: Various behavioural criteria of females of the parasitoid
Diadromus
pulchellus in the presence of their host, Acrolepiopsis assectella, were
investigated. An essentially chemical nature of the stimulant determining
host recognition is proposed. The physical stimuli of the cocoon seemed
not to be implicated, as cocoons whose original texture was completely
altered, either mechanically or chemically, and the silk excreted by
larvae of the host, significantly stimulated the female parasitoids. The
cocoon contact kairomones were detected in aqueous extracts of A.
assectella which provoked a positive behavioural response from the females
with a threshold concn of 1 cocoon-equivalent. The comparison of aqueous
extracts of A. assectella host cocoons, and of non-host species (Bombyx
mori, Ephestia kuehniella and Cacoecimorpha pronubana) demonstrated the
kairomone specificity of the silk as the extracts of non-host cocoons were
ignored by the parasitoid, as were silk threads left by larvae of E.
kuehniella. Finally the contact kairomones linked to the silk seem to be
independent of food plant or nutrient diet of the host larvae. The cocoons
spun by larvae reared on leeks or on artificial diets with or without
powdered leek provoke similar responses in the parasitoids.

ABSTRACT: Pheromone traps were used to monitor populations of Lepidoptera
in
lemon
and orange orchards in eastern Sicily in 1987-88 to help to rationalize
their chemical control. An examination of males captured throughout the
year in pheromone traps of the univoltine tortricid Archips rosanus,
revealed that only individuals captured in May and June belonged to the
species A. rosanus, while the remainder belonged to the polyvoltine
species Cacoecimorpha pronuba. A maximum of 6% of the males captured in
pheromone traps of C. pronubana belonged to A. rosanus. C. pronubana was
more common than was A. rosanus in the lemon orchards. It is concluded
that the pheromones used were not sufficiently selective for these
tortricid species.

ABSTRACT: The use of sex pheromones in floriculture in Italy is discussed.
Sex
pheromones have been successfully applied for monitoring population growth
of several species including the tortricids Epichoristodes acerbella and
Cacoecimorpha pronubana and some species of noctuid (Autographa gamma,
Peridroma saucia and Spodoptera littoralis). Monitoring gives useful
information about the presence of the pests and their flight intensity to
help in integrated pest control decisions. Sex pheromones are also used in
direct control by mating disruption; E. acerbella is controlled by this
technique in carnation crops in the Sanremo area. The use of sex
pheromones combined with reduced but optimized chemical sprays gives
better results than conventional chemical control alone.

blends of 4
sex pheromone components was studied in a wind tunnel at 20-22°C and a
windspeed of 30 cm/s. (Z)-11-Tetradecenyl acetate alone did not elicit
upwind flight, but when mixed with 10% (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-ol it was
attractive to males. Attractivity of this blend was enhanced by the
addition of (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate or (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate, the
optimum blend being (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-ol,
(E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate in a ratio of

ABSTRACT: An outbreak of Cacoecimorpha pronubana is reported on rose (for
the
first
time) and gerbera in commercial greenhouses in Sicily. The roses had
received traditional chemical treatment against other insect pests, while
the gerberas had been protected by means of an integrated control
programme that did not include insecticides. On rose, the leaves were
affected, the young ones being rolled into cigar shapes and the old ones
showing dry necrotic patches. On gerbera, the flowers as well as the
leaves were damaged, being webbed together into a shelter for the larva
and prevented from opening fully. In tests on control, a preparation of
Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (Bactucide P), alone or in
combination white mineral oil, was applied to gerbera and deltamethrin or
triazophos to rose. The bacterial treatment had little or no effect on the
tortricid and the added oil had no synergistic action but caused dark
spots on the older gerbera leaves owing to the penetration of the oil into
the tissues. Triazophos produced marked phytotoxic symptoms on rose, but a
single application of deltamethrin gave 90% mortality of larvae on the
buds, as compared with 12% mortality for no treatment.

ABSTRACT: Tests are reviewed on the control to date of Liriomyza trifolii
on
greenhouse-grown gerbera crops in Sicily, where it also attacks Phaseolus
beans, celery and gypsophila and is becoming increasingly difficult to
control in greenhouses where broad-spectrum insecticides are regularly
applied. The advantages and disadvantages are discussed of chemical
control (including the use of botanical insecticides, insect growth
regulators and especially pyrazophos, which is compatible with the
activity of some parasitoids of the agromyzid and does not cause
phytotoxicity or outbreaks of Tetranychus urticae); yellow trap-dishes
coated with adhesive (which catch up to 86 adults/dish daily but give
insufficient control of heavy infestations); biological control by means
of the eulophid parasitoid Diglyphus isaea (which is effective only to
maintain the agromyzid at very low levels after it has been cleared from
the greenhouse by some other means, and which can result in the emergence
of secondary pests needing separate control, such as Polyphagotarsonemus
latus, Cacoecimorpha pronubana and Spodoptera littoralis); and integrated
control, combining the use of chromotropic traps, selective insecticides
(such as pyrazophos, triazophos or avermectin B1 [abamectin]), fungicides
and eventually D. isaea after the residues of toxic insecticide have
disappeared.

ABSTRACT: Pupae of Epichoristodes acerbella were collected from carnations
in
Spain
and the larvae resulting from these were reared in the laboratory on
carnation or a semi-synthetic diet at 10, 15, 17, 20, 22, 25, 27 or 30°C.
There was no difference between the lifespan of male and female moths.
Lifespan was longest at 15°C (28.5 days) and shortest at 30°C (11.5 days).
Fecundity was significantly lower at extreme temperatures (10, 27 and
30°C), with a maximum at 25°C (469 eggs per female). Egg hatching was not
affected by temperature, except at 10°C (48.2%) and 30°C (0%). Taking into
account the mean and maximum temperatures of the parts of Spain where this
moth occurs, it was concluded that E. acerbella could reproduce during the
winter months and that high temperature played a limiting role only in the
southern areas of Spain.

ABSTRACT: The elementary components in the sex pheromone blend produced by
virgin
females of the polyphagous pest Cacoecimorpha pronubana were identified by
gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and microchemistry in the laboratory
in France. Of the 6 components isolated, the 3 that affected male sexual
behaviour were (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (the main component of the
blend), (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate and (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-ol. Caps
baited with a 1000 µg blend of (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate/(E)-11
-tetradecenyl acetate (90%) and (Z)-11-tetradecen-1-ol (10%) were used to
monitor flight of the pest in field crops of flowers in south-eastern
France.

ABSTRACT: Information is given on the morphology and bionomics of
Cacoecimorpha
pronubana (Hb.) (Tortrix pronubana) and Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.)
and on the damage caused to carnations grown in the greenhouse in Italy.
Both species have 4 generations a year, and the mature larvae or pupae
overwinter in the leaf stalks or flower buds. The first adults emerge in
April and the females lay 150-180 eggs each on the leaves. The larvae
hatch in the spring, and those of C. pronubana feed on the leaves and
those of E. acerbella mine the flower buds and other tender tissues.
Pupation occurs in cocoons spun between leaves, in tunnels in the stem or
in hollowed-out flower buds. The 4 generations last 70, 81, 187 and 202
days, respectively, owing to the very variable duration of the egg stage
according to the time of year. Control tests in 1982-83 in Pisa, Pistoia
and Lucca demonstrated the effectiveness of pyrethroids such as permethrin
(Ambush), deltamethrin (Decis) and fenvalerate (Sumicidin), especially for
a first application in May or June; this should be followed 10 days later
by an application of an organophosphate such as triazophos (Hostathion) at
150-200 g/hl, and 10 days after that by a further application of
pyrethroids. It is pointed out that mevinphos, which was previously
recommended for the control of these species, is now officially banned
from agricultural use.

ABSTRACT: Problems of environmental contamination caused by chemical
pesticides
in
the Pescia district of Tuscany, Italy, led to a search for alternative
methods of controlling the pests of carnation, the most widely cultivated
crop in the area. Since Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.) was the insect
pest that normally required the greatest number of chemical applications,
especially in the greenhouse where it developed more rapidly, the
effectiveness of Bacillus thuringiensis for its control on carnation was
tested in the laboratory and in the field. The bacillus proved effective
in the laboratory when ingested at 0.2% in an artificial larval diet;
however, in the open field 71% mortality was obtained from spray
treatments of the plants with Thuricide HP (a commercial preparation of B.
thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki) at 0.15%, and in the greenhouse no more
than 87% kill was obtained from sprays of B. thuringiensis applied at 100
or 150 g/hl.

infesting
conifers in the UK for the first time. Himalayan juniper (Juniperus
squamata) in southern England was found infested in July 1972. In May
1979, larvae caused slight damage to white spruce (Picea glauca) growing
in a polythene tunnel house in southern Scotland. This represents a
northwards extension of the range of the tortricid in the UK. In 1981,
Leyland cypress (X Cupressocyparis leylandii) growing in a polyethylene
tunnel house in central England was damaged. In January 1982, a pot-grown
example of Thuja occidentalis indoors in southern England was heavily
infested by larvae.

ABSTRACT: Physico-chemical analysis in the laboratory in France, by methods
that are
described, of the female sex pheromone of Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.),
a serious pest of carnations in the Alpes-Maritimes, showed that the
secretion contained 4 chemical components, Z9TDA [(Z)-9-tetradecenyl
acetate] at 8%, Z11TDA [(Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate] at 64%, Z9TDol [(Z)-9
-tetradecen-1-ol] at 2%, and Z11TDol [(Z)-11-tetradecen-1-ol] at 26%. None
of the components when tested alone had any effect on the male of E.
acerbella, but the combination of the first, second and fourth in
proportions similar to those of the natural secretion proved to be
competitive with virgin females. The role of Z9TDol in affecting male
behaviour has not yet been fully determined.

ABSTRACT: Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.), a pest of carnations, was first
reported
from Spain in 1976 in the Province of Barcelona, though it had probably
been present in the country for some years before that. In 1979, the leaf
miner was also reported in Murcia and Almeria. Notes are given on its

Cacoecimorpha pronubana (Hb.), another pest of carnations in Spain, on its
biology, its natural enemies and its control. In Barcelona, it is
parasitised by the hymenopterous species Colpoclypeus florus (Wlk.),
Itoplectis maculator (F.) and Trichogramma evanescens Westw. as well as
the dipterous parasites Actia pilipennis (Fall.) and Nemorilla maculosa

results have been obtained with synthetic pyrethroids, but the timing of
the treatments is critical.

ABSTRACT: The research work of the Institute of Agricultural Entomology
attached to
the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Pisa, Italy, was continued
in 1980 [see RAE/A 69, 5133] and is reviewed briefly in 6 main sections,
of which 5 are concerned with insect pests (and 1 with mammalian pests
also) of crops, trees and stored products, and 1 with the control of
mammalian pests only (mostly rodents). Studies on integrated control in
the first section were divided into control on olive and on glasshouse
crops. On olive, different sampling methods for monitoring levels of
infestation by Dacus oleae (Gmel.) were tested at Asciano and methods of
calculating the economic thresholds for D. oleae and Saissetia oleae (Ol.)
were further investigated in the Grosseto district; in both localities,
new attractants (such as microencapsulated ammonium compounds, pheromones
and protein baits) were tested in chromotropic traps, and the relationship
between the numbers of D. oleae caught ant the incidence of infestation
was compared for these traps and for McPhail bottle-traps. In greenhouses
in Tuscany, light-traps with lamps of differing intensity and range were
compared for their effectiveness against Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.)
and Cacoecimorpha pronubana (Hb.), and investigation of synthetic sex
pheromones for mating disruption and mass-trapping of these moths was
continued. In the second section, field and laboratory studies were
continued on the role of abiotic factors (temperature, humidity and
photoperiod) on the development of D. oleae on olive, and in the field
also on their effect on the number of generations produced and on seasonal
numerical fluctuations, as shown by sampling of grape clusters and catches
of adults on chromotropic sticky panels. The third section is concerned
with the screening of synthetic analogues of juvenile hormones and
ecdysones for the control of Tenebrio molitor L. and other insects by
ingestion or by contact. In the fourth section, faunistic studies were
concluded on the insects and small mammals inhabiting pine and oak forests
along the coastal region of Tuscany, with particular attention to
behaviour and seasonal fluctuations in the populations of certain insects.
The fifth section is concerned with laboratory studies, using Musca
domestica L. as the test insect, on the mechanics both of the toxicity of
various insecticide compounds and of the development of resistance to them
by insects. Abstracts of recent serial publications and monographs by the
institute on these subjects are appended.

ABSTRACT: Larvae of Cacoecimorpha pronubana (Hb.), which had not previously
been
recorded as an economic pest in Belgium, were observed damaging the leaves
of Rhododendron praecox in August 1980 near Ghent. Out of doors the
tortricid had 2 generations a year, while on the same food-plant in the
greenhouse it appeared to have 3. In control tests, 5 insecticides were
applied by means of both a knapsack atomiser and a medium-pressure
sprayer, the former giving the better results. Endosulfan at 350 g/litre,
oxamyl at 240 g/litre and 25% methomyl were each applied at 100 ml spray
fluid/100 litres water, 25% chlorpyrifos was applied at 150 g wettable
powder/100 litres water, and permethrin at 250 g/litre was applied at 20
ml spray fluid/100 litres water, in the medium-pressure sprayer, whereas
concentrations were 5 times as high in the atomiser. Chlorpyrifos afforded
the best control, giving 91.7% mortality 3 days and 87.3% 7 days after
treatment with the atomiser, while the corresponding rates with the medium
-pressure sprayer were 87.5 and 84.2%, respectively; methomyl and
endosulfan were the next most effective compounds, but permethrin and
especially oxamyl did not give satisfactory control.
ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:
Of five insecticides tested at the recommended doses for control of C.
pronubana on rhododendron, cv. Praecox, chlorpyrifos gave the best
control, followed by methomyl and endosulfan. Permethrin and oxamyl
treatments were not satisfactory. A knapsack atomiser gave better coverage
than a medium pressure knapsack sprayer.

generations a year in the field at El Maresme and possibly 5-6 generations
a year in glasshouse crops. All stages can be found in the field
throughout the year and there appears to be no diapause. Insecticidal
sprays (especially of acephate, carbaryl, azinphos-methyl parathion-methyl
or methomyl) are widely used for control. A survey of natural enemies
revealed about 1% parasitism by Colpoclypeus florus (Wlk.), 12% by
Itoplectis maculator (F.) and about 5% by tachinids (Actia pilipennis
(Fall.), Nemorilla maculosa (Mg.) and Pseudoperichaeta sp.).

ABSTRACT: The research work on the Institute of Agricultural Entomology
attached to
the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Pisa, Italy, in 1979 is
reviewed briefly in 7 main sections, of which 6 were concerned with insect
and mammalian pests of crops or trees and 1 with the control of rodents
only, in the region of Tuscany. Studies on integrated control, in the
first section, were divided into control on olive and on glasshouse crops.
On olive, methods of calculating the economic threshold of Dacus oleae
(Gmel.) and Saissetia oleae (Ol.) were investigated, new attractants for
monitoring Dacus adults were tested, and the ecology and behaviour of S.
oleae, Filippia oleae (Costa) and F. follicularis Targ. were studied in
Tuscany. In the greenhouse, chromotropic sticky traps were tested for the
control of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westw.) and sex pheromones for the
control of Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.) and Cacoecimorpha pronubana
(Hb.) through mating disruption and mass-trapping. In the second section,
field and laboratory studies are reviewed on the role of abiotic factors
such as temperature and humidity in limiting the development and
multiplication of D. oleae on olive. The third section is concerned with
the screening of synthetic juvenile hormones and ecdysones for the control
of Tenebrio molitor L. and other insects. In the fourth section, notes are
given on studies of the ecosystem and biocoenosis of the forest along the
coast of Tuscany, and especially of the rodent and insect pests (Pissodes
castaneus (Deg.) (notatus (F.)) and Dioryctria pineae (Stgr.)) of Pinus
pinea. The fifth section is concerned with laboratory studies on the
mechanism of resistance to insecticides, using Musca domestica L. as the
test insect. The sixth section is concerned with faunistic research on the
insects and small mammals in some forest biotopes of Tuscany.

ABSTRACT: Following severe damage to cultivated carnations in southern
France
by
Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.) in 1972, the biology and ecology of the
tortrix was studied for the purpose of developing control measures. The
results are presented. All types of carnations, both those grown in the
open field and those in glasshouses were found to be attacked, as well as
other species (such as Gerbera and roses) cultivated in glasshouses;
numerous wild species also served as food-plants and acted as reservoirs
of infestation. It was found possible to rear E. acerbella on an
artificial diet (based on wheat-germ, maize flour, yeast and soyabean
hydrolysate) developed for Acrolepiopsis assectella (Zell.) (Acrolepia
assectella). Population dynamics were studied in the field partly with the
aid of traps baited with virgin females. There were 4 annual generations,
the larvae of the fourth overwintering. The species showed considerable
resistance to cold. Although the level of damage has decreased somewhat
more recently, the polyphagy of the pest, its high reproductive potential
and its relative resistance to cold represent a threat to carnation
growers; chemical control measures based on its developmental
characteristics need to be worked out. Tests to date on chemical control
in France are reviewed.

ABSTRACT: In laboratory investigations on the biology of Epichoristodes
acerbella
(Wlk.), a pest of carnations in South Africa, constant temperatures from
15 to 25 deg C were optimal for the development of the immature stages, as
well as for female fecundity. The calculated lower threshold for
development was 7.2 deg C for the egg, 7.0 deg C for the larva and 7.9 deg
C for the pupa. At 20 and 25 deg C, relative humidities of 12.5-100% did
not affect the duration of the egg and pupal stages, but fewer eggs
hatched at humidities of 92.5% and above. Larvae developed as successfully
on an artificial diet as on carnation plants. Five larval instars were
recorded at 25 deg C. The immature stages were better adapted to extreme
temperatures and low relative humidities than those of Cacoecimorpha
pronubana (Hb.), as described by W. Herfs.

acerbella
(Wlk.) in carnations grown for cutting by means of irradiation [see RAE/A

Rome, Italy, in which eggs of the pest were exposed to doses of 5-70 krad
1, 4 or 7 days before hatching. Complete kill of eggs was obtained by
exposure of eggs 2 days old to 7 krad, 5 days old to 20 krad or 8 days old
to 70 krad. Treatment of eggs 8 days old with 13 krad gave complete pupal
mortality, and treatment with 10 krad induced complete sterility of the
ensuing adults; some eggs were laid, but none hatched.

ABSTRACT: Biological control using B. thuringiensis preparations is
discussed
for
caterpillar pests of various glasshouse vegetable and ornamental crops. In
application trials 3 pulse-jet type machines (Pulsfog, Swingfog and
Dynafog) proved suitable for applying sprays of the wettable powder,
whereas an exhaust type machine (Dorman) killed the bacterial spores and
denatured toxin crystals by heating. In glasshouse trials B. thuringiensis
fogs applied to tomatoes gave excellent control of tomato moth (Lacanobia
oleracea) larvae. The amount of fog deposited decreased with increasing
distances from the fogging machine and the effective application distance
was about 12 m with small machines such as the Swingfog SN11P. Droplet
distribution on foliage is described. Studies on beds of tall
chrysanthemums showed that high volume sprays gave the most even cover
compared with thermal fogs and with a fan-assisted, controlled droplet,
spinning disc low-volume applicator. Tomato moth larvae were the most
susceptible to treatment, whereas the common species on year-round
chrysanthemums, angleshades moth (Phlogophora meticulosa), silver Y moth
(Autographa gamma) and carnation tortrix moth (Cacoecimorpha pronubana),
were 3 times less susceptible and required heavier dosages. Suitable
dosages are given for these species and for Clepsis spectrana on roses and
Mamestra brassicae on sweet peppers and chrysanthemums.

ABSTRACT: With a view to controlling Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.) in
carnations
(intended for export as cut flowers) by means of irradiation, the
possibility of mass-rearing the tortricid in the laboratory for the
purpose of testing its susceptibility to radiation was investigated in
Italy. The larval diets tested and the containers used for them are
described. Although several meridic diets were acceptable to the larvae,
casein, olive oil and ascorbic acid were found to be essential nutrients.
It also proved very important not to place the eggs at too great a density
on the rearing medium, since contact between the larvae led both to their
damaging one another and sometimes the pupae, and to the spread of a virus
infection that caused heavy larval mortality in the first 2 generations.
At the density of 40 larvae/100 g medium (especially the standard diet
containing water, agar, olive oil, powdered carnation, debitterised
brewers' yeast, yeast hydrolysate, casein, cellulose, cholesterin,
ascorbic acid and Nipagin [methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate]), and at 23-27 deg C
and a relative humidity of 70%, a satisfactory number of insects were
reared in containers divided into small cells. The accidental selection of
undesirable characters or a decline in fertility was prevented by the
introduction of wild-caught males during the fifth laboratory generation.
Males lived for 10-12 and females for 8-10 days, the average number of
eggs/female varied from 192.4 to 419.5 and the hatching rate from 52.6 to
91.4%, without obvious decline in succeeding generations.

ABSTRACT: Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.) is frequently found on carnation
blooms
from the Mediterranean imported into the German Federal Republic. Since
quarantine regulations are in force, many have to be rejected because of
the presence of the tortricid. According to Italian experience, it is
possible to free the packed blooms from infestation by irradiation without
damaging them, and approval of this means of control would free
international trade in such blooms. Investigations were therefore carried
out to ascertain the minimum dosage that would achieve the desired object.
Eggs, larvae and pupae were exposed to gamma -radiation from a 60Co source
at doses of 10, 11 and 15 krad. Eggs so irradiated gave rise to 1% normal
fertile adults. With treatment of larvae, doses of 10 krad permitted the
development of fertile females, 11 krad of fertile males and 15 krad of no
fertile adults of either sex. Irradiation of pupae at 10 krad permitted
the development of fertile adults of both sexes, but 11 krad resulted in
females that were practically sterile. At 15 krad, only residual fertility
persisted. It is concluded from the investigations that a dose of 15 krad
at a rate of 5 krad/min is the minimum treatment for quarantine purposes
when the period between packing and radiation does not exceed a few hours.

specificity means that species not of economic importance may confuse the
evaluation of the size of pest populations. When the examples taken from
the traps are very damaged, examination of the genitalia is essential for
accurate identification.

ABSTRACT: Details are presented of catches of males of Epichoristodes
acerbella
(Wlk.) (a pest of carnations) in traps baited with living virgin females
and operated in the Alpes-Maritimes, France, in 1974-76. Although flights
never completely stopped during the winter, 3 main flight periods from
March to mid-May, from June to late July, and from August to mid-November
could be distinguished, the last period representing the flights of 2
overlapping generations. The long first flight period represented the
emergence of adults that had overwintered in the greenhouse followed by
that of adults that had developed from larvae overwintering in the open
air on hardy carnation varieties. It is concluded that chemical control
treatments should begin in late April against the young larvae of E.
acerbella and should become more frequent from 15 June onwards, when,
after the second flight and oviposition periods, infestation becomes
heavy; treatments should be continued until November, since the last adult
flight could occur as late as the end of September or October. Further
monitoring of flights would be desirable during the spring if the female
sex pheromone could be synthesised in order to avoid the necessity for
continuous mass-rearing of the pest in the laboratory.

ABSTRACT: Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.), which was introduced from South
Africa, is
widely distributed in the carnation-growing areas of Italy and southern
France and is liable to be imported with the cut blooms into the German
Federal Republic. Quarantine regulations are in force to prevent such an
introduction, but the larvae spend most of their life deep within the
carnation flowers and are difficult to detect and to control. Tests were
carried out to ascertain whether exposure to gamma -radiation would afford
an effective means of freeing the flowers from infestation, since it would
sterilise the insects without damaging the flowers. Irradiation from a
60Co source showed that the minimum dose preventing development of adults,
eggs, larvae and pupae was 13 krad at a rate of 5 krad/min, provided that
the time between packing and irradiation did not exceed a few hours; this
is recommended, though a higher rate of emission would be desirable.

ABSTRACT: In 1973-76, the morphology and biology of Epichoristodes
acerbella
(Wlk.)
on cultivated carnations were studied at Pescia in the Italian Province of
Pistoia. All stages, including the adults and pupae of both sexes, are
described with a view to easy identification, since this species shows
some seasonal colour variation and also marked sexual dimorphism. The life
-cycle and behaviour of the tortricid was very different according to
whether it was developing on carnations grown at least during the winter
in the greenhouse or on those grown entirely out of doors. In the
greenhouse, where cultivation begins in April and flowering in the summer,
the first egg-masses were seen in early June, each female laying about 400
eggs in about 4 days, and the adults lived for 14-18 days. The egg stage
lasted for 10-12 days in spring, 7-9 days in summer and 25-40 days in the
winter. The larvae hatching between mid-June and early July attacked in
succession the leaves, flower buds, flower stalks and flowers, without
discriminating between flowers of different colours. Pupae were found from
mid-July to 10 August on the apical leaves or in the hollowed-out flower
buds. The adults emerged after 5-6 days between the end of July and mid
-August. Adults of subsequent generations were observed in mid-September,
from mid-October to the following March and in mid-June, respectively,
with overlapping of the last 2 generations, and the life-cycle of the 4
generations lasted 71, 81, 187 and 202 days, respectively. On carnations
grown entirely in the open air, where cultivation begins in early
September and flowers are produced from the following summer until mid
-autumn, E. acerbella had only 3 generations, lasting 253, 95 and 107
days, respectively. The eggs of the first generation were laid in early
October, and the larvae hatched in November, feeding continuously but
slowly and giving rise to adults in late April; the adults of the second
generation emerged up to the end of July; and the third generation, which
overlapped with the second, began with eggs in early July and ended with
adult emergence at the end of October.Other plants infested by E.
acerbella are enumerated, and included other ornamental plants, some fruit
trees and lucerne. The nature of the damage caused is discussed and
compared with that caused by another pest of carnation, Cacoecimorpha
pronubana (Hb.). Natural enemies found on E. acerbella during the present
studies comprised the predator Atheta coriaria (Kraatz) and the parasites

ABSTRACT: The factors contributing to the wastage of citrus fruits in the
Spanish
Province of Castellon were studied in the 1975-76 season. Data on the
numbers of unusable fruits arriving at 4 factories processing citrus for
export were obtained and samples of the fruit were taken for examination.
The total citrus harvest in the province was calculated to be 452 600 t
and the weight of fruit classified as of no commercial value was
calculated to be almost 100 000 kg. Six varieties of oranges and mandarins
were considered and the results for each variety are shown in detail.
Wastage was highest for Navel oranges (23.3%) and lowest for blood oranges
(Sanguina) (9.4%). When all varieties were considered together, the
highest percentage of wastage attributed to a single factor (22.43) was
that resulting from attack by arthropods. The injurious species are listed
as Ceratitis capitata (Wied.), Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Zell.),
Cryptoblabes gnidiella (Mill.), Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis (Bch.),
Tetranychus urticae Koch (telarius auct.), Cacoecimorpha pronubana (Hb.),
Lepidosaphes beckii (Newm.), Insulaspis gloverii (Pack.) (L. gloverii),
Parlatoria pergandii Comst., Chrysomphalus dictyospermi (Morg.) and
Planococcus citri (Risso). Other factors included adverse climatic
conditions (20.52%), physiological disorders (11.77%) and poor handling
either at picking or in storage.

from Yugoslavia and reared in the laboratory on eggs of Ephestia
kuehniella Zell. (Anagasta kuehniella), Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.),
Cacoecimorpha pronubana (Hb.) and P. unionalis. At 21-25 deg C, fecundity
was highest (46.4 eggs/female) when adult females were fed on a mixture of
honey with yeast hydrolysate, and lowest (28.0 eggs/female) for honey
alone. The ratio of males to females in the progeny varied from 0.026 to
1.26, and parthenogentic reproduction took place. At 21 deg C, the
duration of adult life averaged 5.0 days on honey and 6.7 days on honey
with yeast hydrolysate. At 18 deg C, the duration of adult life averaged
5.2 days, but the fecundity was low (13.8 eggs/female). When females were
provided with water only they lived for 2.5 days and laid 10.0
eggs/female, no males appearing in the progeny. The life-cycle was
completed in 10-12 days at a temperature of 21 deg C and a light intensity
of 500 lx, and in 9-10 days at 25 deg C and 1000 lx.

ABSTRACT: As a result of observations in Italy in 1972-74, information is
given
on
the life-history, habits and control of Sesamia nonagrioides (Lef.), which
caused 30-90% loss of gladiolus flowers in the south of the Province of
Latium (being most injurious to the summer and autumn crops), and of
Peridroma saucia Hb., which caused up to 60% loss of carnations in the
Ligurian Riviera in late summer and autumn; the seasonal presence of the
second species is discussed in relation to current knowledge of its
migration, and data on both species are compared with those from the
literature of Italy and other countries. Among the chemical compounds
tested for control, acephate appeared to be the most effective; it was
applied at the rate of 0.5 kg toxicant/ha every 10 days beginning when the
gladiolus plants were 10-15 cm high against S. nonagrioides, and at a
concentration of 75 g toxicant/hl every 10-12 days during the adult flight
period against P. saucia.

ABSTRACT: Detailed descriptions are given of the adults, the newly hatched
and
mature
larva and the pupa of Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.), a pest of carnation
and other ornamental plants, fruit trees, vegetables and fodder crops,
which was recently introduced into Italy [cf. RAE/A 61, 4827], followed by
information on its life-history and natural enemies. Near Bari in Italy it
appeared to have four generations a year in the open and 5-6 in the
greenhouse, but these were difficult to distinguish since all stages were
present for most of the year. Eggs were laid on the leaves of carnation at
all heights on the plant, and the larvae fed first on the leaves and later
attacked the flower buds and mined the stems. The parasites observed
comprised the Ichneumonid Itoplectis sp., which emerged from 8% of the
Epichoristodes pupae in July; the Braconids Bracon (Habrobracon) hebetor
Say, B. (H.) nigricans (Szepl.) and Apanteles xanthostigmus (Hal.), of
which the first attacked 7% of the larvae but the last two were rare; and
the Tachinid Nemorilla maculosa (Mg.), which was recovered from up to 20%
of the host pupae in June-July. Control afforded by these parasites was
insufficient. Owing to the difficulty of reaching the larvae within the
stems, organophosphates that control this and other pests should be
applied at hatching. Infested shoots can be removed during picking and
thinning, and fields after harvest should be properly cleared of plant
debris, which is a source of reinfestation for greenhouses.

ABSTRACT: Studies carried out over a period of three years in a glasshouse
in
southern England on the arthropods attacking chrysanthemums grown
throughout the year have led to proposals for an integrated system of pest
management.Myzus persicae (Sulz.) was present at all times, and aphids
were found to occur in the flowers, rendering them unsightly, when the
numbers averaged more than 3 /leaf, though much larger numbers can be
tolerated without affecting plant growth. Populations of M. persicae were
kept at an extremely low level (seldom more than 0.5 /leaf during 27
consecutive crops) by the introduction of aphids parasitised by Aphidius
matricariae Hal. into the boxes of rooted cuttings before planting [cf.
RAE/A 59, 1524]. The introduction rate was 1 aphid/10 cuttings. Damage to
the flowers was then completely prevented.Tetranychus urticae Koch was
also common. Mites were found in the flowers and webbing was formed when
there were 8-10 mites/leaf. Excellent control was obtained by the
introduction of the mite into the boxes of cuttings before planting
together with the predacious mite Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot
at the rate of one Tetranychid per plant and one predacious mite per 50
plants.Minor aphid species and the leafminer Phytomyza syngenesiae (Hardy)
require controlling with insecticidal sprays, and a schedule of
fortnightly applications of a mixture of 0.1% dioxathion and 0.025%
pirimicarb appeared promising.During the studies, damage was caused,
mainly in early summer and early autumn by larvae of Phlogophora
meticulosa (L.), Autographa gamma (L.) and Cacoecimorpha pronubana (Hb.).
These were controlled by a drenching spray containing 0.5% Bacillus
thuringiensis (serotype 3b), applied at the first sign of infestation and
repeated after 1-2 weeks if necessary. It is suggested that a control
programme based on these measures could be used between March and
November, being supplemented in the winter months by a complete spray
programme. This would be necessary because the efficiency of the Aphidius
parasite diminishes under short-day conditions and low light intensities.

ABSTRACT: Carnations grown commercially for cutting in the Italian Riviera
are
severely damaged by Cacoecimorpha pronubana (Hb.) and, more recently, by
Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.), which was introduced from South Africa
and has become more numerous than the indigenous species. Differences in
the appearance and habits of the two Tortricids are briefly described.
Infested flowers of 14 different cultivars (and colours) collected from
various localities in the Ligurian region were packed normally as for
marketing, in shallow hampers or cardboard boxes, and taken to Como where
they were irradiated at 2-15 krad from a radioactive cobalt source while
still in their wrappings and containers. Surviving larvae were removed
from the flowers and reared individually on small untreated carnation
plants to observe delayed effects of the treatment; details of the results
are given in graphs and tables. Doses of 9, 12 or 15 krad caused complete
mortality, although not always during the larval stage, and 5 krad caused
a combined mortality of 91% (71% as larvae, 17% as pupae and 3% as
adults). Surviving adults mated with untreated partners produced few eggs
(more when the male than when the female had been treated), of which 36%
hatched; the ensuing larvae did not complete their development. Larvae and
pupae surviving all doses of irradiation had a delayed development. It is
concluded that the best dose is 6 krad, which gave 98% kill (63% as
larvae, 25% as pupae and 10% as adults); the surviving adults, although
appearing almost normal, produced no eggs when mated with untreated
partners. The treatment appeared to have no adverse effect on the flowers,
which sometimes lasted longer than untreated carnations kept under the
same storage conditions.

ABSTRACT: Adult behaviour and oviposition patterns of Cacoecimorpha
pronubana
(Hb.),
Phlogophora meticulosa (L.), Autographa gamma (L.), Mamestra brassicae
(L.) and Lacanobia oleracea (L.) were studied by introducing laboratory
-reared pupae into glasshouses. Adults emerging from these pupae were
located by direct searching of chrysanthemum plants and of the greenhouse
structures for up to 3 weeks after emergence. In small houses (2.9 X 13.1
X 2.5 m), 49 adults of C. pronubana emerged. At least 15 stayed inside the
house and laid 1750 eggs. A total of 262 adults of P. meticulosa, A. gamma
and L. oleracea emerged and escaped from the houses without laying eggs
inside. In a large glasshouse (9.8 X 13.1 X 5.1 m) with automatic
ventilators, a total of 840 adults of P. meticulosa, A. gamma and M.
brassicae emerged, and many of them were prevented from escaping when the
ventilators were closed during the flight period. Adults were inactive in
the daytime, and most were found on the highest parts of the aluminium
framework, mainly on the sides that received most external light
overnight. None was found on the glass. Only 27.3% of the adults of P.
meticulosa were found on the plants. Moth distributions probably result
from moths flying until they reach a barrier, which they then tend to
follow, with directional responses to gravity, light, settling site, food
-plant and oviposition site superimposed in varying degrees on this basic
pattern. About 30 470 eggs were laid, more in the outer than in the inner
beds and more in the outer than in the inner rows of a bed. P. meticulosa
and A. gamma oviposited only on plants. M. brassicae laid about 1854 eggs
on the undersides of leaves and 2972 on glass and framework, mainly on the
sides with most external light. All 5 species of moths can cause serious
damage to crops. Initial infestations can be controlled by sprays of
chemical insecticides or Bacillus thuringiensis. Usually, a few larvae
survive a single spray and, in the absence of further control measures
they may produce a troublesome second generation, although in certain
circumstances further control measures may not be required. If biological
control of other tomato pests becomes widespread, steps should be taken to
prevent L. oleracea again becoming an important pest.

ABSTRACT: Cacoecimorpha (Cacoecia) pronubana (Hb.), all stages of which are
briefly
described, is a pest of carnation. During observations in Sicily, small
numbers were also observed on buds of lemon, on the leaves of broad bean
(Vicia faba) and geranium (Pelargonium zonale) and on the leaves and
unripe fruits of olive (from all of which it has been reported before),
and on Oxalis acetosella, Papaver rhoeas, Sonchus oleraceus, Citrus
macrophilla and a Citrus hybrid referred to as Carrizio citrange (which
are recorded for the first time as food-plants of this Tortricid).
Information is given on its life-history and habits, especially the mating
behaviour of the adults and the mining by larvae of the first two instars
within the leaves. Damage to carnation comprises holes and mines in the
outer leaves of a shoot caused by the early-instar larvae and distortion
and webbing of the inner part of the shoot into the characteristic 'duck's
-bill' shape, which is caused by older larvae; sometimes the flowers are
attacked just before opening, on the stem at the base of the bud or
internally, injuring the petals and reproductive organs. Cacoecimorpha has
four generations a year, lasting 64-75 days in April-June, 45-50 days in
May-August, 40-45 days from late July to the end of September and 200-220
days from the end of September to the following March, respectively; the
larvae overwinter on the food-plant, continuing to feed at a reduced rate,
and the first adults emerge at the end of February. Natural enemies found
elsewhere are enumerated; in observations in Sicily only Elachertus
artaeus (Wlk.) was found, a gregarious ectoparasite of the full-fed
larvae, and the rate of parasitism was low. For chemical control of the
young larvae before they form their protective webbing, mixtures of DDT
and parathion are recommended at 80 and 20 g/hl, respectively, in a single
application at the first signs of infestation, or at 200 and 50 g/hl,
respectively, in up to four applications 15-20 days apart if the
infestation is already at an advanced stage. Plant remains after the
flower harvest should be burned.

ABSTRACT: During the course of biological control experiments involving
releases of
Opius concolor siculus Monastero againt Dacus oleae (Gmel.) on olive in
the Sicilian Province of Palermo in 1967 [cf. fourth abstract above,
etc.], in three of the localities tested (the districts of Capaci,
Teorretta and Carini, where three different varieties of olive were
grown), olives falling from the trees were caught on nylon sheeting and
examined for pests in order to determine the main cause of premature drop.
In the three districts, D. oleae caused 2.43, 11.78 and 3.1%,
respectively, of the total fall, Prolasioptera berlesiana (Paoli) together
with the fungus Sphaeropsis dalmatica 5.05, 20.77 and 1.58% and Prays
oleae (Bern.) 0.04, 2.07 and 8.04%; Cacoecimorpha (Cacoecia) pronubana
(Hb.) remained at an insignificant level in all localities, and 26.51,
15.28 and 17.93% of the fruit-fall at the three places, respectively,
could not be accounted for. Details of the findings at different
collection dates are set out. Parasitism of Dacus by Opius in June
-November averaged 40.93, 29.13 and 20.31% in the three localities,
respectively.

ABSTRACT: Observations were made in 1967-70 on the species of Lepidoptera
that
infest
geranium (Pelargonium zonale) (grown as an ornamental plant) in autumn and
winter in Campania and Calabria in southern Italy; in mild winters eggs
were laid and development continued, although larval mortality was
sometimes heavy. These species included the Noctuids Plusia (Chrysodeixis)
chalcites (Esp.) Blepharita solieri (Boisd.), Ophiusa tirhaca (Cram),
Autographa gamma (L.), Mamestra brassicae (L.) and Phlogophora meticulosa
(L.) and the Tortricids Cnephasia (Cnephasiella) incertana (Treitschke),
Eudemis profundana (Schiff.) and Cacoecimorpha pronubana (Hb.). Notes are
given on the morphology, distribution and habits of the first three
Noctuids and on the types of damage caused. The first two regularly appear
on geranium in autumn. Plusia chalcites is well known in Campania as
polyvoltine pest of tomato and suffers severe larval mortality on geranium
in winter. B. solieri, which has one generation a year, has not recorded
as a pest of economic plants and is characterised by a long diapause in
spring and summer in Italy.

ABSTRACT: As a preliminary to the planning of a programme of integrated
control
to
protect Citrus crops in the Spanish Province of Castellon de la Plana
against insect attack, observations were begun in 1969 to determine the
range and abundance of the natural enemies of the principal pests in the
area. Saissetia oleae (Ol.) was found to be parasitised by Scutellista
cyanea Motsch. and Coccus hesperidum L. by Metaphycus luteolus (Timb.);
aphids, including Toxoptera aurantii (Boy.) and Aphis gossypii Glov., were
preyed on by Chrysopa carnea Steph. (vulgaris Schneider), Syrphus sp. and
various Coccinellids, and Braconid parasites of the genera Lysiphlebus and
Praon were observed attacking them; larvae of Cacoecimorpha (Cacoecia)
pronubana (Hb.) were parasitised by the Eulophid Colpoclypeus florus
(Wlk.) and by Apanteles sp., and the eggs by Trichogramma sp.; and
Tetranychus cinnabarinus (Boisd.) was preyed on by Stethorus sp. For some
years, Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Muls. has been reared in the laboratory
and released against Planococcus (Pseudococcus) citri (Risso) when the
mealybug resumes activity after winter. Icerya purchasi Mask. is no longer
a major pest of Citrus in the area as a result of the release and
establishment of Rodolia (Novius) cardinalis (Muls.). Promising results
were obtained in 1972 when traps baited with virgin females of
Cacoecimorpha pronubana were used to catch males of this moth.

ABSTRACT: The author reviews recent published work on the attraction of
Ostrinia
nubilalis (Hb.) and other Lepidopterous pests by synthetic sex pheromones,
notably cis-11-tetradecenyl acetate [cf. RAE/A 61, 1064, 2693] and
describes field tests in France in 1973. Sets of attractants of two
different manufacturing origins were studied simultaneously, one French
set in the Paris district and the Department of Gironde and one set from
the European Corn Borer Laboratory in Iowa (as part of an international
project of the Corn Borer Working Party) in Alsace, the Poitiers region
and the Bordeaux region; the two groups also used different types of trap,
the French one a cardboard trap of the type Pherotrap I [cf. 62, 4653] and
the international one a flat horizontal cardboard tray mounted on a pole
and covered with adhesive. The results showed that the males of several
geographically different French populations of O. nubilalis were attracted
to cis-11-tetradecenyl acetate (and especially to the mixture of 96 parts
cis isomer to 4 parts trans isomer) in the same way as American
populations. Rubber septa in the traps proved more effective than
polyethylene containers in diffusing the attractant [cf. 62, 4659]. The
concentration of 1 mg attractant/trap proved more effective than 10 mg,
and 100 mu g was more effective still, but the strongest dose also
attracted males of Pyrausta purpuralis (L.) and Cacoecimorpha pronubana
(Hb.). It is concluded that the weaker and more species-selective
concentration could be used to monitor the flight periods and abundance of
Ostrinia males in the field and that sex attractants and inhibitors tested
in the United States could also be tried in France.

ABSTRACT: Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.) was first found in France in
August
1971 on
carnations near Nice and has since been found in several localities within
a radius of 30 km of that city. This Tortricid, which was described from
South Africa, has recently become established in several European
countries including Denmark, Norway and Italy [cf. RAE/A 61, 4827, etc.].
Characters are given by which the larvae and adults can be distinguished
from those of Cacoecimorpha pronubana (Hb.), another pest of carnation
there, and the damage caused by the larvae is described [cf. loc. cit.].
'Mediterranean' carnations appear to be more heavily attacked than
'American' carnations; up to 90% of the shoots are sometimes infested.

ABSTRACT: The export of carnations from the Cote d'Azur in southern France
has
for
over 15 years been hindered by the presence of larvae of Cacoecimorpha
pronubana (Hb.), which has caused the rejection of the flowers by West
Germany and other importing countries [cf. RAE/A 51, p. 246]. In 1970,
another Tortricid, Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.), which originated from
South Africa [cf. 61, 4827, etc.], was discovered in Germany in carnations
from the Cote d'Azur, and in 1972 this species was found to have spread
from hills near Nice all over the carnation-growing areas of the
Department of Alpes-Maritimes. It had four generations between April and
October in the field and five in the greenhouse, and it was able to attack
various other ornamental and wild plants. E. acerbella resembles C.
pronubana in appearance, but the aspect of the plants mined by the two
species is different, and the new pest appears to be even more difficult
to control since it spends a greater proportion of its life within the
stem. Annotated photographs of all stages of both species, and of plants
damaged by each, are provided for identification purposes.

ABSTRACT: Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.), a pest of carnation,
chrysanthemum
and
pear in South Africa that has spread to northern Europe [cf. RAE/A 55,
556; 57 2668] has been found on carnation in the north-west of Italy,
where it appears to be in competition with a related pest, Cacoecimorpha
pronubana (Hb.), which it closely resembles [cf. 54, p. 345]. Notes are
given on the distinguishing characters of E. acerbella and C. pronubana
and on the geographic distribution and food-plants of the first species.
Observations in the field and in the laboratory at 25 deg C and 75% R.H.
showed that the females began to oviposit 24 h after mating and laid 200
-240 eggs each on the upper surface of carnation leaves in three batches
over a period of three days. The larvae hatched after ten days and
skeletonised the leaves under a shelter of silk that bound several leaves
together and was lengthened as the larvae advanced; sometimes the growing
shoot, the stem and the flowers were also damaged. Pupation occurred after
30 days, and the pupal stage lasted eight days.

ABSTRACT: Larvae of Cacoecimorpha pronubana (Hb.), a polyphagous pest that
often
attacks carnations, were found infesting ivy (Hedera helix) in the
Kifissia area of Greece in 1970. The biology of the Tortricid was studied
in the laboratory where it was reared through four generations on an
artificial medium originally developed for Heliothis armigera (Hb.) [RAE/A
59, 4011]. When adult females were provided with a diet of 10% sugar and
10% honey in water, fecundity averaged 340 eggs/female, with a maximum of
620. At 27 deg C and 80-85% R.H., the egg, larval and pupal stages
averaged 7, 23 and 8 days, respectively, [cf. 52, pp. 166-167].

ABSTRACT: The physiological effects of gamma -radiation on the carnation
pests
Epichoristodes acerbella (Wlk.) and Cacoecimorpha pronubana (Hb.) were
studied in the laboratory in Italy with a view to possible use of
irradiation for control. Owing to a tendency to cannibalism, the larvae
were reared in isolation on a synthetic diet including powdered lucerne,
groundnut oil, wheat germ, dextrose and casein, which proved more
favourable than diets including powdered dried carnation. The
radiosensitivity of all stages was measured in terms both of lethal and of
sterilising doses. For E. acerbella, which has only recently appeared in
Italy [cf. RAE/A 61, 4827], the hatching of eggs 36 h old was reduced by
50 and 95% after treatment with 5 and 6 krad, respectively, while the
corresponding doses for eggs treated 3 days before normal hatching were 33
and 42 krad. Total mortality of newly hatched larvae within two days was
obtained with 225 krad and of mature larvae with 250 krad. Pupae
irradiated 4 days before the normal adult emergence date were prevented
from giving rise to adults by 80 krad. The LD95 within 24 h was 225 krad
for females and 300 krad for males that had just emerged. Sterile adults
were obtained after treatment of eggs 36 h old with 1 krad, full-fed
larvae with 6 krad, female pupae with 10 krad, male pupae with 30 krad,
and newly emerged females and males with 25 and 35 krad, respectively.
Effects on the progeny of individuals treated with doses too low for
sterilisation are noted from the literature. It is concluded that
irradiation could be applied for control in two ways, namely for the
production of sterile adults for field release and for the treatment of
infested plant material, for which lower doses would suffice. Experiments
with cut carnations indicated that irradiated flowers remained fresh for
the normal length of time or longer, and that, owing to a synergistic
effect, a dose of little over 5 krad would sterilise larvae of any age
within the plant.

ABSTRACT: Observations in eastern and south-western England showed that
strawberry
plants are attacked by larvae of the Tortricids Acleris comariana (Zell.),
Clepsis spectrana (Treitschke), Lozotaenia forsterana (F.), Cnephasia
virgaureana Treitschke (interjectana (Haw.)), Cacoecimorpha pronubana
(Hb.) and Argyroploce lacunana (Schiff.), and notes are given on their
bionomics, seasonal occurrence and parasites. The larvae of all feed first
on the foliage and later on the flower buds, anthers and stamens, causing
distortion of the young fruits, which in some cases they entirely consume.
Acleris comariana and Clepsis spectrana, which was first recorded in
England in 1961, are important, mainly in low-lying districts, and
Argyroploce lacunana and Cnephasia virgaureana have caused severe damage
in recent years. Of the insecticides tested, primarily against Acleris
comariana, sprays of azinphos-methyl, fenitrothion, malathion,
methidathion, mevinphos, parathion and trichlorphon at suitable
concentrations gave very good control of first-generation larvae when
applied at 200 gal/acre. DDT and DDD gave relatively poor control. When
applied against larvae of the overwintered generation in the spring at 100
gal/acre, sprays of azinphos-methyl, fenitrothion, methidathion and
trichlorphon were less effective, though the number of larvae was reduced
by over 50%. DDT, phosalone and phosmet, but not dichlorvos or Dupont 1642
(S-methyl N-(carbamoyloxy) thioacetimidate), also killed over 50% of the
larvae; malathion gave variable results.
