I know X pretty well, but I'm not able to figure why when a new window pops up, SCIM goes south. In X, only shell windows can have focus and when we pop-up these types of lists, no shell focus messages are occuring.

The default window manager is (I think) twm. It is really bare bones. To run any kind of application the user needs to type it into one of the three shell windows provided. If one is going to use a gui then why not use a powerful one.
