TimingThe timing of all this is crucial and, as it should be, is driven by the audience and content and not by suppliers and technology. 2004 is for Europe an important year with 2 major “stimulators”, the soccer championship Euro 2004 and Athens Olympics 2004, two events that traditionally have boosted sales of consumer equipment.
Target 1 – September 13th 2003To start on 01 January 2004, we have planned a pre-start 3 months earlier.In this period only 1 or 2 programs will be sent via satellite (encrypted) to check technical and logistical issues.During IBC2003 (International Broadcast Convention, 12 - 17 September 2003), the major European conference of the Broadcast-industry, we will invite some 500-600 key personnel of the main European broadcasters (both technical and production) as well as the world press to an event that will be held in the Heineken Music Center in Amsterdam, on Saturday September 13th 2003. With 16 HDTV cameras ALFACAM will produce a live HD transmission of a 4 hours event, with music and other top-class entertainment show. The HDTV feed will be sent to cinemas all over the EC, where the signal in HDTV will be projected in some selected cinemas. The target is to have at least 1 cinema in every EC member.
Target 2 – January 1st 2004Euro1080 is to start daily "on air" for 5 hours per day by January 1st 2004.
