Sony Japan has stopped manufacturing both models of the PSX media centre cum game console, with the company revealing that production has stopped and giving no indication of whether it plans to resume at some point in future:quindi si salta alla PS3.

Put simply, the thing plays PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games (including online via broadband with existing PS2 and in some cases PC gamers), DVDs and CDs, can pause, rewind and record live TV, burns CDs and DVDs, can instantly read images from Sony digital cameras and will likely play them back in slideshow format without any real prompts upon inserting a Memory Stick, and will basically replace and or condense all living room appliances into one incredibly sexy little package.

In un cruciale incontro ai vertici avvenuto a Tokyo, Sony ha annunciato un nuovissimo dispositivo elettronico che incorporerà l'Emotion Engine e il sintetizzatore grafico utilizzati nella PlayStation 2. Battezzato PSX (il nome del prototipo originale PlayStation), questo modernissimo dispositivo verrà lanciato in Giappone nell'anno fiscale in corso e nel resto del mondo in quello seguente: ciò significa che potrebbe arrivare in Europa nel 2004 o 2005. Il prezzo deve ancora essere annunciato, ma sappiamo che rifletterà l'avanzatissima tecnologia dell'apparecchio.
Ma di quale avanzata tecnologia stiamo parlando, esattamente? Innanzi tutto, grazie alla presenza del chipset di PlayStation 2 al suo interno, PSX consentirà di utilizzare tutti i giochi esistenti per PlayStation 2 e PS one. PSX fungerà da lettore di DVD (o DVD-RW), registratore di DVD e videoregistratore digitale (DVR). Grazie a un sintonizzatore TV incorporato, sarà possibile registrare i programmi televisivi sul disco rigido da 120 GB o su un DVD-R. PSX sarà inoltre dotata di una connessione Ethernet a banda larga, che consentirà l'accesso immediato alle funzionalità di gioco in rete della PS2. Oh, e cosa dire della compatibilità con USB 2.0 e Memory Stick, proprio come PSP? Riassumendo, PSX non è che il nirvana dell'intrattenimento elettronico, racchiuso in un elegantissimo involucro.
E a proposito di tale involucro, come puoi vedere dalle prime immagini il design di PSX abbraccia lo stile dei comuni dispositivi elettronici, elegante e sofisticato come ogni altro apparecchio Sony in bella mostra nel tuo salotto. I dischi verranno inseriti mediante un ingresso situato nel pannello frontale e PSX potrà essere posizionata sia verticalmente che orizzontalmente (l'immagine principale mostra la posizione verticale), proprio come la PS2.
Senza dubbio PSX rappresenta un nuovo approccio nei confronti della tecnologia della PlayStation 2, ma ciò non significa che si tratti della "PlayStation 3" (la PlayStation di prossima generazione è infatti ancora in via di sviluppo), né che la PlayStation 2 stia uscendo di produzione o vada considerata ormai obsoleta. Non temere: ancora per molti anni PlayStation 2 rimarrà il sistema digitale di intrattenimento più amato nel mondo e grazie al lancio di PSP (o "PlayStation Portable") alla fine del 2004, il futuro del nostro sistema di gioco preferito è più roseo che mai.
Sebbene il progetto PSX sia ancora in fase preliminare, questo annuncio di Sony dimostra inconfutabilmente che il mondo di PlayStation non si limita più a una serie di console da sistemare sotto la TV. Empowered by two key semiconductors ("EmotionEngine®" and "Graphics Synthesizer"), CPU and graphics rendering processor used for PlayStation 2, PSX has realized a high-speed high-definition GUI (Graphical User Interface), the likes of which have never been experienced before. This first-of-a-kind GUI enables speedy and easy access of various content to be enjoyed on PSX, with the same level easiness as switching TV channels with a remote control.
PSX is also equipped with various features as a digital media player, providing storage and playback of a variety of entertainment content such as high-resolution, mega-pixel images from digital still cameras and music from various package media.
Since PSX is designed to run various features by firmware via a powerful hardware engine, users can upgrade or add new features later by accessing the network.*1
The two PSX models of DESR-5000 and DESR-7000 are equipped with maximum capacity HDD respectively to accommodate various features in serving as a digital home electronics product as well as a game device for enjoying PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games.
Sony Marketing (Japan) aims to accelerate the expansion of the DVD recorder market by positioning PSX as the key to home entertainment and the core for digital electronics products throughout the living room.
