Not only do Monitor Audio speakers typically sound good, they look the business too, thanks to the care the company takes over its woodwork and finishing. The new S6 model – in the stylish dark ‘rosemah’ of the review samples – is no exception.
This is a relatively compact floorstanding design – 85cm tall and 18.5cm wide – and once fitted to their plinths, and spiked into the carpet, they feel stable and solidly planted, despite lacking the mass-loading option available on some Monitor Audios.
The speakers’ in-house ceramic-coated metal drivers now have a non-magnetic cast-polymer chassis and slim surrounds, allowing more working cone area for a given size, and of course those narrower cabinets. The S6s use two 15cm C-CAM® drivers, one handling low bass and the other carrying out a more conventional mid/bass role. The treble is handled by a development of the company’s C-CAM® gold-dome tweeter.
This is a 25mm unit, with an improved motor system and surround allowing it to reach up to 30kHz, 5kHz higher than past versions of this driver – which fans of SACD or DVD-Audio will appreciate. The bass extends down to 38kHz, so there should be more than enough low-end clout to balance out the high-frequency stuff.
And so it proves – at least, once some care has been taken with set-up. Make sure you fit the spacers provided between the plinth and speakers, remove the grilles and, with a blob of Blu-Tack, pull off the metal tweeter-protectors, which are only held in place by the drivers’ magnets. If you have to use the speakers close to a rear wall, make sure the foam bungs provided are inserted into the lower of the two rear ports, otherwise the bass becomes unruly. We found the S6s sounded better placed at least 0.5m out into our listening room, unbunged and with biwired connections to the amp, but even then the bass can sound slightly thick and overshadow other frequencies. A slight toe-in helps firm up the stereo image.
They don’t need huge amps, thanks to 91dB/w/m sensitivity and 6 ohm impedance, but high quality electronics are recommended given the open and involving sound of which these speakers are capable. With a close-miked track such as James Taylor’s Line ‘Em Up from SACD they really deliver the character of the singer’s voice and they’re just as expressive with the cultured rhythms of Groove Armada’s latest outing, having just the right mix of rhythmic control and fluidity.
Push them harder, as we did with the soundtrack of The Who’s Albert Hall DVD, and the ability of the Monitor Audios to slam hard into those windmill riffs is delightful. Even a spot of snarly, gnarly Motorhead from CD doesn’t upset them.
But amazingly the best is yet to come: these are simply beautiful speakers for classical music, once a few days’ thrashing has tamed their initial rawness. With the latest Naxos release of Holst’s The Planets on DVD-Audio, they thunder out Mars with true conviction, all glorious rasping brass and crunching dynamics, and they’re just as comfortable with delicate soprano arias on CD. Soundstaging is natural and appropriately scaled, with performers located precisely and an airiness that remains even when the speakers are driving hard.
These are rather magical speakers, with a poise and grace that belies their ability to turn on the power when required. Pair them with a good CD player and suitably accomplished amp, and you won’t go far wrong.
