Dr. Joseph D'Appolito is an international recognized authority in audio and acoustics, specializing in loudspeaker system design. He has consulted to organizations worldwide, including ones in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Far East. He originated the popular MTM loudspeaker geometry. Commonly known as the D'Appolito Configuration, which is now used by dozens of manufacturers throughout Europe and North America.
As a member of the Audio Engineering Society, Dr. Appolito has published several conference and journal papers demonstrating his in-depth understanding of loudspeaker system and crossover design. Using computer-based tools and specialized test equipment, he has designed many highly successful loudspeaker system, including the ARIA 5 point Source for Focal, France which was selected loudspeaker of the year for 1991 by hi-fi video magazine (Paris).
As a Contributing Editor to Speaker Builder magazine, a publication with international distribution, Dr. D'Appolito has contributed widely to the popular literature on loudspeaker design and testing over the last decade. He designed Mitey Mike a widely used, low-cost, precision microphone for loudspeaker testing and developed the TopBox loudspeaker design software
He is Contributing Technical Editor for three popular books on home and auto loudspeaker construction published by Mater Publishing for Radio Shack.
He has written the book Testing Loudspeakers, to be published by Audio Amateur Corporation in early 1998. A popular speaker, he recently presented talks on loudspeaker design at Loudspeaker University, an industry sponsored seminar.
Dr. D'Appolito holds the B.E.E (bachelor of electrical engineering). SMEE (Scientiae Magister; Master of Science majoring in electrical engineer), EE and Ph.D degree in electrical engineering from RPI (Rensselaer polytechnic Inst), MIT and the University of Massachusetts .
In addition of his specialization in acoustics, he has authored over 30 Journal and conference papers on applications of modern estimation and control theory, statistical signal processing and stochastic systems identification and modeling to a broad range of navigation, guidance, communication and signal processing problems.
By the Atlanta Audio society:
For over 35 years Dr. D'Appolito is instrumental in the design of over 80 loudspeaker systems and related audio engineering projects in North America and abroad. He is especially noted for the (MTM) driver geometry applied in loudspeakers around the world. His latest designs such as the AC-10, 3-way towers feature the acclaimed Accutron Ceramic drivers and the totally computer designed X-719 2-way system. He is currently focusing on multi-channel systems as the ongoing expansion of home audio.
