That the bay of Ammoudia in
ancient times extended on the inside much more than today, it is known
from Thucydides (1, 46 3÷4) who tells that, on the eve of their
naval battle with the Corcyreans, in 433 b.C., the Corynthians anchored
in the bay a fleet of 150 ships:
"They (the Corynthians)
anchored in the harbour by Cape Cheimerion in Thesprotian territory; inland
from the harbour, a short distance from the sea, in Thesprotian Eleatis,
is Ephyra. Near it the Acherousian Lake empties itself into the sea and
the Acheron, which flows through Thesprotia, runs into the lake, which
thus takes the name
Acherousian from the river".
