THE GOLDSMITHS

The goldsmiths had to stamp every product with a special mark wich had to be different for each of them.

The weighing of the gold had to take place only with the "peso milanese" stamped with the official measures of the Council. In the weighing of less precious things made up of different metals, every metal had to be separately weighed: for example, the price of a cauldron was the result of the sum of the separate prices of each metal it was made of copper, plus that of the handle, made of iron.

The receiving of stolen goods was punished as a theft : buying precious metal was forbidden to servants if they didn't have the licence from their master. When the goldsmith bought some gold from a foreigner, the latter was obliged to declare his name and address in front of two trustworthy witnesses.
