Of Oriental origin , dated  back to the first MillenniumB:C.; the psaltery was a string instrument with a flat body soundbox , trapeze-shaped ,with resonating  holes. It was kept vertically, agaist the chest, and plucked with the fingers, elsewhere it was kept in one’s lap. One could pluck it or strike it with little sticks.
