The ecclesiastical modes

Gregorian modes are divided into in "authentic" and "plagali". Ecclesiastical modes were given names used for the Greek modal scales, but with a different meaning due to a wrong transcription.

The "authentic" modes are: "Dorico, Frigio, Lidio, Misolidio".

The "plagali" modes go down four notes compared to the relative "authentic" mode and they are: "Ipodorico, Ipofrigio, Ipolidio e Ipomisolidio".

In the pictures of scales reproduced here we can see that every "authentic" mode has in common with his "plagale" the  "finalis" note that means the end of the passage.

The terme "repercussio" means the note wich the melody moves around.
