The hexachord (guidonian hand)
Guido dArezzo, after giving a decisive contribution to the
alphabetic and neumatic notation, devised a method to simplify the learning of the
melodies written on the stave for the singers. This method was based on the hexachord, a
succession of six sounds (ut-re-mi-fa-sol-la)in which the position of the semitone was
determined and set in central position. |
