A piece of mosaic composed by black and white tesserae of 3,32cm x 1,34cm, presently walled up under the Seminary hall, remembers with its figures of Grammar, of Philosophy, of Dialectic, of Geometry and of Aritmetic, brings to mind the school of sciences housed in the bishop's residence. |

The whole mosaic would certainly also have contained the figures of Rhetoric, of Music and Astronomy. Most Art-historians attribute the mosaic to the year 1105, a period in which the mosaicists worked in Modena, in Piacenza, in Novara, in Vercelli, in Casale, in Aosta and also on the other side of Alps as far as Germany. Because of its dimensions we can think that the mosaic was part of the Cathedral choir floor. |
