We do not know exactly the date of the cloister
construction; it is likely to have been built around the end of the 11th or at the beginning of the 12th
century, when the Pope Alexander the 2nd set up the order of the Canonici Regolari
employed in the service of the cathedral. In this occasion the Benedictine monks from S.
Benigno della Fruttuaria abbey were charged to run some churches in the Ivrea diocese and
probably also the Cathedral. The cloister was to connect different buildings around the
church. From the cathedrals presbytery, indeed, it was possible to enter the clerical residence, the study and writing rooms, the refectory, |

the laboratories and the guest room without | |
going outside. Unluckily of all those constructions only a cloister side is left, the one facing towards the church apse. All the other buildings were demolished with a part of the cloister in the 14th century during the construction of the Green Count castle. |
