THE "GERLERI"

The "gerleri" were those who carried the pannier ("gerla"), a big wooden container carried on the back by shoulder-straps like a kit-bag. Normally the "gerleri" utilised the container for the transport of wine but they had another important role for the Community. The "gerliero" may be, in fact, compared to today’s fireman. In case of fire he had to run to the place where the fire had developed and for every pannier full of water he was paid 12 "denari"; if he failed to perform the task required he was fined.

The "gerliero" was relieved from guard service and from military service. To prevent somebody from running to the fires with a small quantity of water, the Commune marked the panniers with signs which corresponded to the level of the contents. Probably this measure didn’t suffice for frauds and in 1355 they established that the "Precones" checked the contents personally.
