THE CARTERS |
The carters, together with the herdsmen and the mule-drivers,
were in charge of the transports of various goods. The containers which were used for
wine, grapes or oil had to be marked by the Credenza
to prevent the goods from being sold only in part. If the carters caught a thief stealing, they had the right to do justice , assailing him without pity with a "pungolo", a stick with a pricked edge, normally used to goad the animals at work. Carters and all the other carriers were forbidden to sleep on their own cart when they crossed a town centre. |
