DAVID COVERDALE & FRIENDS / WHITESNAKE
After DEEP PURPLE's demise in 1976, Coverdale decided to form an own group where he would have been the only leader, in order to play the music he wanted and to avoid quarrels about vocal parts like the ones he had with Glenn Hughes in Purple's last days. His first efforts, which were released as DAVID COVERDALE & FRIENDS, were produced by former Purple Roger Glover. In 1978 Coverdale decided to rename the group WHITESNAKE and to hire Martin Birch as producer in lieu of Glover. Two other Purple members played in Whitesnake: Jon Lord (from 1978 to 1982) and Ian Paice (in 1980 and 1981), though Coverdale would have never given much exposure to any other than himself.
Around 1985, probably obsessed by the success of many metal vocalists, he underwent surgery in order to modify his voice. His late 80s albums feature a more modern sound, but IMHO his best albums are still TROUBLE and LOVEHUNTER.

...
In 1993 David joined forces with former Led Zeppelin JIMMY PAGE. But the record they released together was disappointing at all, and not for David's fault, for he sang good throughout the album. The fact is that Page is not able to play a decent solo here, and most of solo parts are played by Coverdale's harmonica. What could have been a great album has been rapidly forgotten. Album details on next updates.
