Vipera Aspis (Called "Aspide" in Italy) is the more widespread Viper in all our territory(Italy); therefore, the species is divided into 3 subsbecies: -Vipera Aspis Atra: mainly in the north of the country -Vipera Aspis Francisciredi: common viper; from north to south of Italy -Vipera Aspis Hugyi:only on the southern regions of Italy A strange thing about vipers and Italy it's the fact that you can find vipers in all Italian Territory but not in Sardinia. Italian Aspis vipers have an extremely variable colour and disposition of blotches on the body: thus the background color can range from Gull Gray to Dark Brown with darker blotches (melanistic aspis are rare and are generally very dark ; often completely black with orange eyes) The lenght of adult aspis vipers normally is around 60-70 cm, but occasionally some specimens are over 80/85 cm. Aspis Vipers can be found nearly at all altitudes, they are ovoviviparous like all viperids and they do mate in april-may; clutches are normally composed by 5-9 babies.
