The Pigneto: periphery two steps far from the center
The Pigneto is a characteristic popular quarter of Rome risen between the end of the eight hundred and first thirty years of the successive century. It is comprised in a territorial triangle that has, like apex, the ancient access to the city of Porta Maggiore; for sides, Prenestina and Casilina roman roads; for base, via Acqua Bullicante.
A "borgata" spontaneously risen for will of single thrifty people and cooperatives, outside of whichever unitary urban design. A dense place of relations and humanity, chosen like scene for some of the more important film of the Neorealismo and not only: from “Roma Città aperta” [Rossellini, '45] to “Bellissima” [Visconti '51]; from “Domenica della brava gente” [Majano'53] to “Il Ferroviere” [Germi '55]; from “Audace colpo dei soliti ignoti” [Loy '60] to arrive to “Accattone” of Pasolini ['60].

The natural vocation of the Pigneto to being a cinematographic scene comes from to the particularitity of the history that in its ways has been stratified: a history made of simple people, railwaymen, laborers, "botteghe" handicraft who crowded the periphery risen to little steps from the center of Rome. That periphery that affectionately the same Pasolini called “the crown of thorns that encircles the city of God”.
To penetrate itself today in the ways of the Pigneto, means to come near to the traces of those photograms, carved in the shapes of the city. But also to notice new dynamic city that make of the Pigneto a privileged observatory through which observing the contemporary in motion, made of varied identities and communities. The Pigneto today offers like one true and own city island, a quarter-country, one small city in the city: a pedestrian island, industrial sheds, intensive buildings, isolated small houses and alleys of other times populated from humanity multiforms. The history of the historical residents are stirred with the voices of the new inhabitants, attracted in mass from the unusual character of the quarter, from its past so present. They are savoured unknown interlaces sonorous that imposes to watch to the today: to the incredible melting pot of languages, relational styles of life, modalities and stratifications of sense.
