The monastery “St. Petka Bulgarska”

This small monastery is situated on the hill in the nortern end of the village.
The legend says that there was a big monastery, destroyed during the Ottoman invasion at the end of the 14th century.
In 1388 the Turkish troops burnt down the medieval town of Cherven with the neighbouring monasteries and killed the monks there.

The nuns Paraskeva, Varvara, Ekaterina, Marina and Nedelya were burned together with the monastery of Koprivets.

In 1987- 1989 Yuordana Cholakova and Dobra Rahneva from Rousse with other Christians from the village reconstructed the monastery, secretly from the communist government.

Today, the abbess Mother Varvara, wich name is Dobra Rahneva, tell us the story of the monastery:

God appeared to Baba Yordana in a dream one night and said her to the old monastery wich was on the place of her father's house. God also encouraged her to rebuild the monastery within a three years”.
On the 1 May 1987, Dobra and Yordana, with other their friends started to rebuild the monastery “St. Petka Bulgarska”.
It was reopened officialy on the 14 October 1989.

Mother Varvara,
