Nicopolis ad Istrum

Located at 45 km from the village of Koprivets.

Nikopolis ad Istrum was founded in 102 AD by the Roman emperor Trajan to honour the victories over the Daci tribes.

The ruins of that ancient town are situated 3 km distance from the village of Nikup, on the ovest of the road E 85, 20 km on the north of the town of Veliko Turnovo, the medieval bulgarian capital.





In II- IV century AC Nikopolis ad Istrum was the most important center of the Roman provinces of Misia.
The town was badly damaged by the gothic invasions of the 5th- 6th centuries AD and
, during the Byzantine dominion, it was reconstructed.




Many various archaeological monuments from different epochs were found there.
The archaeological researches in the ancient town were started at the begining of the 20th century.
Тhе French archeologist J. Seur and the Czech V. Dobrusky were its first explorers.
From 1996 each summer there works the british team of Dr. A. Poulter at the University of Nottingham.
